With Jimmy at QB? No, I can't. Jimmy doesn't attempt throws down the field very often. In practice today, according to some of the reports Jimmy didn't attempt any throws beyond 20 yards today and almost all of them were under 10 yards.

That's going to be Jimmy's down fall - Trey is going to beat him out, if he doesn't start throwing down field more.

Cant at all deny what you're saying. Jimmy earns his keep down the middle if we're going 20+ yards. I dont think Shanny even expects Trey-type throws out of him at this point other than plays designed to catch the defense napping (like in his 2019 high %, lowest amount of attempts year).

But Aiyuk's body control in the air to make grabs is other-wordly.

I think this year Jimmy does attempt more downfield throws for these reasons

He knows his days are numbered
We will have better pass pro
We will have wrs that get open downfield (BA and company)
Nice to see him being a mentor to the rookie. I think letting Trey sit and learn like as a 21 year old kid behind someone who has no problem helping his understudy improve and get to know the basics is beyond extremely important.

Garoppolo has welcomed Lance with open arms since the 49ers drafted the rookie in April. The veteran was the first player to welcome Lance to the team via a text message on draft night. Garoppolo plans to help the 21-year-old any way he can, even serving as a mentor, all while knowing that Lance will one day replace him.

"It's not like I would ever hold something away from him, I-don't-want-to-tell-him-this type of thing," Garoppolo shared. "It's just, when you let [the relationship] happen organically, and that's what kind of we've done, I think that's when it's most natural, and you can really build a normal relationship between two people.

"I don't want to draw a line anywhere or anything like that, but anything he needs, I'm willing to help him. I think Nate (Sudfeld) and Josh (Rosen) are the same way. We've got a good room right now [with] the QBs. It's fun to be around.

He's going to be a lot more mobile this year on designs.

The athletic just did their annual QB rankings which was made up of.... The all-star voting panel included seven general managers, five head coaches, 11 coordinators, 15 executives, seven quarterbacks coaches and five others working in front offices or in other coaching capacities. They placed 34 veteran quarterbacks into one of five tiers, from best (Tier 1) to worst (Tier 5).

Jimmy ended up tier 3 and the 21st ranked QB on their list. Take it all with a grain of salt, but this is something a lot of people have been debating in here for like a year now
Is this all time active QB or just based on last year?

It's based on this upcoming year and how they value them heading into 2021…it's not based off just last yr.

That same list didn't have Jimmy Ward in the top 15, so take that list for what it's worth

The Athletic doesn't have a panel made up of GMs/HC/Coordinators voting on safeties...they only do it for QBs.

So I'm not sure what list you're referring too? It's not the same list.
Is this the Atlantic article everyone is raving about?

"I bet a lot of people have him as a 3, as a product of the system and a product of the defense, but I think he is better than that," a quarterbacks coach said. "I think he is a very good player. He's really got a savvy and a feel and just a natural way about him, a natural fluidity and understanding and feel for the position. He's had the injuries, but I think he has the toughness to him and a little bit of grit, throws the ball well, accurate and all that."

Or the very next paragraph?

"Jimmy is better than people think, but if he is in the market, to me, you are not like, 'Oh, yeah, let's get Jimmy G,

Good one. So on that FS list Jimmy didn't crack the top 15. Both Jimmy G and Jimmy W are playing with some attitude this year. Imo it will be both their best years (judged on a per game basis bc both are injury prone and Jimmy g might get replaced)

There is not FS list from The Athletic (which is what I posted). Not sure what the point is in bringing this up?

Yes and if you read just about every QB on that list they find the "nicest" comments on every one of them

You forgot to add the rest of that last paragraph....

"I think Jimmy functions in Kyle Shanahan's offense and understands his offense, and Kyle knows he can get him to do what he needs him to do, but I think he would like to have a more talented player. It would not surprise me if Lance was starting midway through the season. I think he has a little bit of the Mahomes-type traits."

And yet with those remarks this is how they graded him....

Tier 1 votes: 1 | Tier 2 votes: 6 | Tier 3 votes: 37 | Tier 4 votes: 6 |

86% of the votes think Jimmy is a tier 3 or worse QB in the league. Hope he proves them all wrong.

He will IF he stays healthy. That's a big IF. Regardless our QB situation is in very good shape.

not to mention the confidence he is developing with Veta liks Sanu, and the chemistry he's showing with Aiyuk. going to give him way more confidence in letting it rip deeper as opposed to having guys like Pettis to throw to lol
Grant is pimping a "pump and dump" theory for Jimmy G to work a trade this year... if Jimmy is ballin this season I would find it hard to believe they would trade him unless the price was very steep, like 2 firsts

it was mentioned this play was off-schedule as a result of the play breaking down. which is even better in terms of showcasing their chemistry here on display. granted, its just 1 play with no pads. but hopefully its a nice glimpse of much more connections like these to come
