I agree. There's a lot of reasons why we wouldn't want to have Jimmy stay as the backup. Obviously, it'd be nice to have an experienced backup that we could count on, but I can think of a few reasons off the top of my head why we wouldn't keep him:

1. We'd be paying him $25 million if he's on the roster at the start of the season. That money could be rolled over to next year to help us sign our FAs.

2. He may not want to remain here as the backup. First of all, it'd be awkward as hell for him. Second, he's good enough to be a starting QB in this league and he's almost 30. He might not want to lose another year of his career being Trey's backup when he could start somewhere else.

3. Trading him would ease some of the pressure on Lance. If Jimmy is still here, there might be calls to put Jimmy in if Trey struggles for a game or two. If Trey is named the starter, we need to commit to that and stick with him through any rookie bumps.

I think Kyle is in win Super Bowl now mode. If thats the case its smarter to keep Jimmy. He's proven he can make it to the SB so if Trey is starting and goes down then Jimmy is still there and our SB hopes aren't immediately killed. Yeah its expensive, but if we win the SB then nobody cares about the money. Also we prob trade Jimmy for a better pick. Given our injury history I think its the best move for a team in win SB right now mode.

Traded or cut.. we most likely need to pay for some of the trade.

We cannot have Trey start and pull Trey when things get tough. it's sink or swim

Agreed with on all points made. I was thinking mainly reason number one, as smart as the 9ers have been with the salary cap, I just can't see them having a $20 million back up. Especially if this trade can land Lynch a late 1st or two 2nd round picks!!!

And reason number two, I think if he has a chance to start elsewhere no doubt he'll jump at that opportunity.

Totally agree, and that's why you see all the confidence in Jimmy from Shanahan. Its the beat writers who think they can properly evaluate a QB throwing out things like Trey is the best QB out there blah blah blah. Maybe he is, only Shanahan has his poker face on who really knows!!!

I got Jimmy starting until he fails. no reason to weaken our QB depth when there's a really good chance at a ship

JG will be starting under center for the first three or four games... then,... high ankle sprain or something else in the lower body region...

After that, there's a good chance he'll need to wait for Lance to go down to get the job back... and if Lance doesn't go down,... trade or cut before 2022 begins.

I don't know what you're reading. Yes the reporters are going crazy. But the yardage, the accuracy, Are signs that tray is doing better. No all the reporters saying Anything about mechanics or scheme know we can't really trust that. Because the majority of these reporters have never step foot on the football field without a tag around their neck. Is Tray running, And making passes that Jimmy could never make on his best day…. absolutely Is the majority of it against the second team? Yes. But I can't imagine how when it's being shown and reported that he is toying with the second string defense, And then when he got a few plays with the first string against the first string he killed it. With all those things out it up I can't imagine not getting more time with the ones does anything positive for this team. To see if he is truly better than Jimmy

Also All the numbers and everything that I'm reading on Jimmy Garoppolo, don't really back up the statement John Lynch made. It sounds like he's being Jimmy. Scared to throw the deep ball, only will throw short to intermediate. Still making his bonehead plays. Which could easily be replaced by rookie mistakes.

Jimmy has got to get out of the habit of checking the ball down. Receivers are open down field and he has to start hitting them.
