Lol, your logic is flawed. Just because QB2 has always been a subpar back up means we should follow suit because that's they way it has been.
look at your last sentence and then look at my post. My post is not about getting a solid QB2, it's about not getting rid of two starting QBs just to do it.
you said it yourself, the season is shot if sudfeld/Rosen is starting
I can't say the season is shot. You were discussing going late into the season with serviceable-at-best backups and a legit starter.
We dont even know if that's really the case with Trey, but that's the scenario you created. And if it is, I gotta tell you, it's pretty par for the course in the NFL. Just look across the league,...even at teams that's recently won Super Bowls.

As I said before,...if there's a Julio Jones-type move you can make if you're confident in Trey,...you make it.
With Jimmy's contract and the (lack of) desire of other teams to take him,...we're really stuck in the mud because who'd take him is probably going to have to agree to pay him.
So if there's no players to make space for,...then there's no move to be made. If there are players to make space for and your starter is legit, then you dispose of him. It gives you a better chance at making it to the Super Bowl when a backup that likely won't play isn't hitting your cap @ a $20 Million clip. Just common sense.
But nothing wrong with having serviceable guys as backups on a good team. You posed the question as if it'd be a problem late in the season,...but it's the usual.

It wouldn't be about saving cash,...it'd be about using the allotted cap space more productively as I've said for several consecutive posts now.

I have higher expectations for Jimmy this season without a doubt. no doubt he has a chip on his shoulder with his deep ball and is perceptive enough to have seen its definitely not a strong point of his game. know he wants the opportunity to showcase his improvement in that area. nothing to complain about. still cant believe the superb position we're in as Niner fans right now having him and Trey.
f**k man. so many depressing years of absolutely having 0 answer or any idea/future at the QB position. f'kin JT'Osullivan days and such. easy to forget

So just for reference and worst case scenario, according to AB....say if Jimmy tears his ACL this yr and isn't medically cleared by 4/1/22, he has $7.5M in injury GTDs for 2022.
So basically we'd be paying Jimmy around $27M this yr (to not play and be hurt depending on the timeline), and only get about $18M back next yr if he's still hurt. So around $34M in total gone. That's a lot of cash money.
Just throwing that out there, because Jimmy isn't exactly Cal Ripken Jr.

Haha. Yeah, I'm the one that got him started investigating that on twitter this morning.

Good job! It's on spotrac which sounds like it was an incentive that hit after 2019.

From my source it's due to the 49ers making the NFC Title game in 2020, it had to happen in 2018 or 2019, and the NFC Title game in 2020 was for the 2019 season. Jimmy doesn't have any incentives in his deal.

Also, there are two kinds of injury guarantees, one is the usual GTD for injury, fully on a certain date, the other is GTD if the player is cut while he's injured, Mostert had that last year, $600K.
He also has $7.5M injury guaranteed for this year, due to no beat writers or national media, who have mentioned his money, I think it's only GTD if cut while hurt.

Regardless of who starts/finishes the season as QB, at least we won't have to see Mullens or Beathard out there again. That's something to be thankful for.
