It broke my heart when I heard Bill Walsh say that sometimes coaches are not always truthful in how they answer questions. Sometimes you just have to lie in order to protect the interests of the team.
So we should just believe a book by some random journalist over our beloved head coach? There's a lot of incentive for this author to embellish the truth in order to sell more copies of his book.
None of us know for certain if there was ever any talk about such a trade. What I do know, or believe, is that it would have been foolish to trade Jimmy at that point and have no solid bridge QB at all. As I have said in other threads, the 49ers could likely have stayed at #12 and picked Jones if they were willing to trade Jimmy. However, we would all have screamed if they gave up all that capital for a guy that would have been available later. In truth, I think there was some panic to make sure they got a good one and so they gave up a LOT.
NE might have dangled something but it would have been quickly turned down, IMO.
