From reports, Garoppolo has a torn ulnar collateral ligament. (UCL) From the Johns Hopkins website, that is a ligament in the elbow, not in the thumb area. It is critical to maintain elbow stability in a throwing motion.
"The UCL can be injured in several ways. Most commonly, there is a gradual onset of elbow pain due to repetitive stresses on the ligament. This is especially common in athletes who play sports that require overhead arm use or throwing."
"The instability resulting from a UCL tear may affect your ability to participate in sports that require throwing."
It can be the result of a single traumatic incident. In that case, it usually comes from a fall with an outstretched arm that may also include a bone chip that pulls of the humerus bone. This, however, is less common.
So, the reports of a thumb injury do not fit with a UCL injury.
So, Garoppolo may have been experiencing some pain and instability in his motion that impacted his accuracy. Bingo.
I know it's approaching tin foil hat territory, but what are the chances Jimmy just pulled a Jimmy with his inconsistent play, laid an egg, and now Shanalynch is playing damage control with his trade stock by blaming that game on injury? Obviously durability is also an issue with the guy, but teams would be more willing to gamble on health than an 8 year vet who's still so wildly inconsistent.
It's flat out dumb. Shanny pointed to the specific play and you can clearly see that a hand injury is a high possibility by the way the defender grabbed it and Jimmy falling in it awkwardly. To think this is just coincidence for some crazy conspiracy is nuts.
