Contract extensions are an extension off of the rookie contract not a replacement. The "extension" does not start until the end of the rookie contract.

For example AJ Brown is still under his rookie contract. That contract ends 2022 season. His new contract starts 2023 and goes years 23,24,25,26. I schooled Steve Wallace on this yesterday but as he does...every... single...time I school him he disappears.

We can still sign these guys...
