It takes a lot more than 1 game to win a SB. Also, both SB contenders are typically decent on both offense and defense or completely dominant on one or the other.

Agreed. Was just pointing out the numbers. The winning teams defense obviously plays a role in the score as well.

I only brought it up because I cannot stand when posters (not you) bring up the defense when defending Jimmy. The defense, more times than not, did their job last season. Especially in the playoffs. The offense? Not so much.

Agreed.

i can not see anyone disagreeing with this.. it was also nice that we ran into a packers team who was worse than us with the special teams.. oh,. that reminds me.. no one ever talks about the job robbie did with field goals but remember the two clutch punts he had?? huge! and a stroke of genius by kyle to have deebo return the one kickoff he did in that stretch vs green bay... you could almost hear buck and aikman be happy about that. almost because of course they hate us

Jimmy G is just a modern Neil O'Donnell, a mediocre QB who was an efficient game manager for a contender that relied on a strong defense and run game, and who didn't have the talent to win the big game.

Like Jimmy he lost the 95'- 96' SB with his subpar play.

Still, despite throwing 3 SB picks to 1 td, O'Donnell managed to get a 5 year $25 million contract in the offseason from the desperate Jets, based on his winning record with the Steelers.

And once he got paid, he did the most Jimmy thing by getting injured after going 0-6. So much for bringing a winning culture.

Given that they have uncannily similar stats and regular season win %, you can deduce that Jimmy's winning record, like O'Donnell's, was mostly due to playing on a talented and well coached team, and not the QBs respective talents.

When O'Donnell left, the Steelers kept chugging along with a 10-6 record with QBs Mike Tomczak in 96'-97', and 11-5 in 97'-98' with 1st year starter Kordell Stewart.

The Niners will not only do just fine without Jimmy in Trey's 1st year, they be better off without him.

Neil O'Donnell -

4 years 92'- 95' 37-16 win loss (69.8%)

QBR 87.6 913-1,585 (57.6% completion rate) 10,904 yards 57 tds 32 ints (1.74 td-int ratio).

1 Pro Bowl

Jimmy Garappolo

5 years 17'-21' 31-14 win loss (68.8%) QBR 98.3 898-1,324 (67.7% completion rate) 11,162 yards 66 tds 38 ints (1.74 td-int ratio).

Interesting comparison but i wouldnt go far as to say the 49ers would be better off without him. That solely depends on Trey Lance's performance. Our record with and without Jimmy speaks for itself. A lot of people keep forgetting we were like 1-9 before he got here and finished with like 6 straight wins. On top of that the 49ers record when he is out with an injury is well below .500

So to say we are better off without him is a stretch. I have faith in Trey Lance but i can also see him going through some growing pains to,

Our record with and without Jimmy only speaks to the damage a highly paid QB that can't stay healthy can do to a franchise. Most teams are going to have a worse record when playing their backup QBs for an extended period of time.

I will disagree with respect to the rams game. That defense couldn't get off the field. Cooper kupp could not be maintained. I don't care how many yards or how many points the rams scored. That 10 minute drive in the 2nd half was the back breaker. They beat the niners at their own game and it was demoralizing. I'm not defending Jimmy in that game. He had an awful game. But that defense played like absolute s**t. There's no defending that.

And the worst thing is. People forget how the defense played, and put all the blame on Jimmy. It was a team loss, players and coaches.

Now the defense at cowboys and at packers? Beautiful. At rams? It was atrocious.

lol, you are not making it a case to YACs post but confirming his

YOu do know that Football teams are going to sustain drives and score points. You can not have shut outs anymore.

plus you'r acting as if we never had the ball in the second half lol

Robbie Gould is becoming a legend in playoff history. That walk off FG to beat the Packers was fantastic.

Not including the blocked FG, the offense during this last playoff stretch averaged 15.33 points per game. Only scored 20+ points in one of 3 games. The defense gave up an average of 14.66 points per game. It took a miracle to go as far as we did in the playoffs because of the offense. If the offense was only just marginally better, it is a safe bet we win the SB.

If W/L are a QB stat than so is PPG. Deebo and Kittle are enough to get it done. Add in Mitchell and Aiyuk, Jimmy has no excuse. Bring up injuries if folks want but if he knew he wasn't physically capable of playing at a high level and still played anyway. That would just make Jimmy look even worse.

This is the age old argument about whether the defense is bad when a tema scores a lot or if they're just a good offense that's clicking. It seems that when we lose the defense sucks. When we win it's because the offense was great. Sometimes the defense can play well and still get outplayed by the other team's offense. It's also true that a bad defense or one that's confused can make an otherwise average offense look good.

I always get a kick out of coaches and fans that go to intra squad games either for colleges or pros when they say that the offense looked really good. How do you know? What does that say about your defense?

Battle of the mediocre QBs

JG as the sandwich artist
Mayfield as the hotshot
Corral as the rookie
Darnold as the scrub
Foles as the SB legend

i'd watch.. JG would have good chance..
Lol at least Jimmy wasn't like this with Trey.
