Of course there is a chance that they keep Jimmy this season. However, as soon as they make a public statement saying they plan on cutting Jimmy, they lose all leverage in trade negotiations.

Bingo. Lynch has to say that or any chance of a trade is completely gone. I still can't see them keeping him past training camp or whenever the date is that they will owe him the whole $27 mil.

None of his contract is guaranteed for 2022.

Pre/Post 6/1 Release or Trade
2022 Cap Savings: $25,550,000

Doesn't matter

In 2019 he hit incentives that could activate a $7.5m injury guarantee. Only if he can't pass a physical and sits out the 2022 season.

I keep hearing about July as being critical for releasing Jimmy so they can avoid paying him the $27 mil. I'm not sure where I heard thus but it may have been Maiocco. Whatever, he has to go. The last thing Trey needs is JG looking over his shoulder. What is he going to learn from him? How to throw INTs. How to throw 5 yard passes.

I don't see the 9ers releasing him now. There's nothing to be gained from doing that Imo. If we can't find a trade partner, then he'll most likely remain a 9er until 2023.
Put it this way, we have arguably the best back up QB in the league!

Isn't unused cap rolled over from one year to the next?

Or until someone needs him. This off-season his contract is flat out garbage with his injury situation. Who wants to give up capital for a 25 million dollar contract who is injured and may not even re-sign next year? Come TC to October and a guy goes down and Jimmy is healthy, that contract is a lot more appealing as it's only one year and the 49ers could eat some of it all while getting compensation.

Or if God forbid Trey gets hurt again...

I believe so. It's hard to see them just releasing Jimmy though.

Yeah. That's another reason why there's no need to release him. Trey could get banged up. Another teams QB could go down. That's when we'll see some Interest regarding the JG situation.

You stated there was nothing to be gained. I was simply stating that there might be at least one thing that will be gained. The off season was sort of put on hold because of Jimmy's contract. Do we want his contract to put a hold on yet another off season?

Isn't he a free agent at the end of this season anyway? That would give us the cap room needed to sign/re-sign players. There's also the possibility we could trade Jimmy during the season. QBs are known for getting banged up. We already missed out on opportunities on signing key free agents this year. Next year should be different.

Not if the unused cap rolls over to the next year. If he stays on the roster all season, none of that cap is unused and therefor would not be rolled over.

no doubt

there's a rumor floating around Twitter that the reason why Jimmy was traded to us was because he knocked up Robert Kraft's then girlfriend

2-3 more months of this. Matter of time till he's cut or traded.
