Brissett was added the day after Watson was brought into CLE. He's a good fall back.. a fringe starter type player..

My question and Pat McAfee asked this on his show.. if they didn't think Brissett was the guy in the event of a Watson suspension.. why did they sign him..

Because they still needed a backup quarterback. I'm sure they were also hoping that Watson wouldn't see more than 4-6 games suspension, which Brissett could carry you for. if they have to rely on him for any longer than that, they're screwed.

Brissett has a many months head start working all offseason with the CLE coaches and players.. that matters..

A crap quarterback having a head start doesn't change the fact that he's a crap quarterback. I don't know if the Browns make the playoffs with Garoppolo, I'm willing to bet quite a bit that they don't make it with Brissett.

I don't buy this he's good enough for 6 but not good enough for more.. he's either good enough to start or he isn't..

If you expect your starter to be suspended any amount of games you get someone good enough to start to back him up.. which I feel is what they did..

Granted this is the Browns.. a club that thought giving all their picks and dollars for a pervert was a good idea.. so who really knows what they are up to

They moved on from Mayfield cuz they wanted an 'adult' in the room and they got Bill Cosby

lol.

You don't have to buy it, teams do it all the time. You can have a backup that will start for a handful of games and not ruin your season but if they have to go more than that, you're screwed.

Brissett is a solid backup QB that won't lose games for you but he won't do a thing to win them for you either.

As an NFL starter, he has completed around 60% of his passes, averaging about 198 yards passing, 6.4 yards per attempt and a TD per game with a passer rating of 84. Those are the states of a decent backup quarterback and nothing more. Out of 37 games as a starter, he's thrown for 250+ yards nine times.

And its not like Brissett hasn't had opportunities, multiple teams have given him shots as a starter and he's never been able to rise above backup level performance. If Cleveland's plan is to roll with him as their starter, they aren't winning anything more than 6 or 7 games this season.

If the 49ers didn't have Lance or Garoppolo, would you in anyway feel good about them going with Brissett as the starting QB?

Hmmmm, should I go with a healthy JG or Jacoby Brissett..........tough decision apparently.

Jimmy Cult members feel free to respond.

If you thought your QB was only going to get a few game suspensions. Would you still try to get the expensive serviceable QB?

The Browns CLEARLY didnt think he was only going to get a few game suspension, or they wouldnt be paying him $1M for 2022.

The Browns structure all their contracts like that, its not unique to Watson. They tend to really backload big deals.

Myles Garrett had a base salary of $860,000 in the first year of his big extension and won't be paid more than $1 million until next year when his salary jumps to $17 million. David Njoku is getting a million in his first year of his new extension. Denzel Ward just signed a $100+ million deal, his first year pays him $1 million.

Interesting. I've read a ton of articles saying this was done for the expectation of a suspension, and seen many many people ridicule the Browns for doing this. Had no idea they do it regularly. Thanks.

I expect more articles like these to start coming out once he's gone, but damn! This can't help the dudes trade stock. And for all of those saying he was such a fantastic teammate, eh, not so much.

It's like that ex team scout that was claiming that Lynch and Shanahan were beefing. So much BS gets put out.
