They have done studies and found no significant difference on the injury rates for pocket QBs vs running QBs. Every QB has to move out of the pocket to avoid the rush. The injury to Wilson happened in the open field without any contact but the actual injury could have happened on a previous play and he just never felt it until he ran. QBs have suffered devastating injuries while in the pocket. Montana, Theisman, Steve Young, Aikman, Brady and Alex Smith all had serious leg, back or head injuries while in the pocket.
Bottom line is that the QB touches the ball on every play which means there is the potential for injury. That's the nature of the game in spite of all the rules they have to try and protect the QB. Every season there are several that miss games because of injury.
