My sources are telling me it's the Seattle situation that's why he's not released yet

First we beat up the Packers receivers so hard with Womack that they legit call a meeting about it. Next we beat up on Vikings QBs so bad they have to remake their entire QB room. I am noticing a trend here

Seattle is not a great situation although he does have two legitimate weapons in Lockett and Metcalf. Maybe more consistent weapons at WR than he had here as in 2019 we didn't have a true number one until Sanders and last year Aiyuk started out in the doghouse. They are rebuilding though. But short of them being really bad he might have a shot at starting for several years as I don't have confidence in that front office to hit on a star QB in the draft.
It's interesting that I saw where Brett Favre thinks the Niners are making a mistake in moving on to Trey because "Jimmy wins and wins and wins." The common rebuttal is wins are a team stat and I do tend to agree or understand such a claim. It's like in baseball with a pitcher's won loss record. I mean Jacob DeGrom has been dominant and won back to back Cy Young's when his records were 10-9 and 11-8.
Still though, Favre wouldn't be the first former NFL player to point to Jimmy's win total as evidence of his value. I also think there are some guys, whether it's the respect they earn, the cool demeanor they have, or the ability to make some key plays when it's necessary, the team around them responds and plays better. It's an intangible that's hard to quantify or pinpoint and maybe not everyone sees it or agrees with it.
I'm okay with Trey because that's what they're doing regardless. But hypothetically I could see two variations of this season. One in which Jimmy stays healthy and starts 16 games ( I know). The other where Trey is healthy and starts 16 games. And I can see the Jimmy lead team having the better record this season just because Trey doesn't have that experience yet.
On this board and I'm sure other boards Jimmy's mistakes and misplays were maximized. Most of them were hardly crushing or game changing/losing. Some may have been. It's too bad too that he never seemed to completely recover the athleticism and confidence he had pre ACL. I would still say the offensive line, particularly the interior of the offensive line bears as much blame for the end of the Super Bowl and NFC Championship game as Jimmy does. But it also seems pre injury Jimmy may have been at least a bit more capable of doing more.

I thought he had potential although I also thought there were enough question marks that he certainly may never be anything more than a decent backup.
I also don't know why anyone should take Chris Simms's word on quarterbacks remotely seriously. Guy's entitled or has a right to a job, including the job he has. But he was a disappointment in college and a wash out in the NFL. I'd listen to Kurt Warner or Steve Young's opinion on a quarterback. Jeff Garcia's as well. Heck, I could listen to his dad's as Phil Simms was pretty decent. Even Trent Dilfer, pretty much a bust, but runs a respected QB camp.
Chris Simms could never figure out how to play QB himself so it makes me snicker that he has criticism of Lance or Fields- even if every player has their imperfections.

He goes to SEA and he has to face our D twice
He has seen 1st hand what our pass rush looks like and knows what we did to super stars like AR in prior years
JG has to have some serious delusions of grandeur to want to volunteer for that 2x

I think the contender talk goes out the window when it's late August and he's not on a new club yet.. at this point he just wants to go somewhere I imagine..
If I am JG I try to land in a spot where I could push for the starter gig. NYJ, HOU, CLE, NYG or SEA makes sense along those lines.

I don't know the guy and some people really latched on to that, "Oh he ghosted everyone" claim to further knock him.
But he doesn't strike me as someone who has much pettiness in him. I'd imagine the person who's most surprised he's still on the 49ers roster out everyone in the organization, everyone in or associated with the NFL, and all of our fans might be Jimmy Garoppolo.
I'd say he'd go to Seattle if they're the only team that gives him a chance to start, offers him the most money, or is the first to reach out.
Not saying he'd jump at the first team to offer either. But it's getting to the point to where the sooner he can join some other team's roster the better for him if he actually wants to start and know what he's doing.

John Lynch had a long answer when Tom Tolbert asked him on KNBR what the timeline looks like for when the 49ers would release Jimmy Garoppolo if there's no trade. However, his first words were, "Yeah, you know I think we're getting pretty close."

San Francisco continues to give the impression that the team could hold onto Garoppolo in 2022, as unlikely as that seems.
"I think any scenario is possible," head coach Kyle Shanahan said regarding the topic on Tuesday.
Later in the article
"If he leaves, we'll always be grateful for what he brought here. And if he's a part of us, we'll forge ahead, knowing we've got a really good player."
Lynch
Probably going to keep him

They're not keeping him. You're not planning on keeping a guy if you won't even give him a copy of the playbook or let him sit in meetings.
