Pat Shurmur seems to be one of the names most bandied about if Arians is gone.
Yikes...
Failed with the Rams.
He got like what, one year as HC with the Browns? No one succeeds there. Case Keenum is looking like an MVP candidate right now. He could be worth another shot.

That makes two quality candidates? (McDaniels ).

Thank God we didn't give Chip one more year.

Glad those days are over.
Past 3 years. Jed and Co should have more free time this January.
Time to extend the cabana and get into another drawn out legal battle.

This. Shurmur failed in Cleveland. So did pretty much everyone else. He has a long coaching resume, having worked under Andy Reid for many years and a good track record of working with QBs. I think he's definitely one of the better candidates.

Not a very good track record....
Offensive ranking:
2009 (OC): #29
2010 (OC): #26
2011 (HC): #29
2012 (HC): #25
2013 (OC not calling plays): #2
2014: (OC not calling plays): #5
2015: (OC not calling plays): #12
2016: (OC): #28
2017: (OC): #8
5 of 9 seasons ranking 25 or worse... + 10-23 record as a head coach. This season does not make his history go away.

You have to look at where some of those teams were before he got there. The Rams in 2008 were a 1 win team. In 2009 the offense improved in pretty much every category.
On January 21, 2009, Shurmur was hired by Steve Spagnuolo to be the offensive coordinator of the St. Louis Rams..
He helped the Rams improve to a 7–9 record following a 1–15 season in 2009, the second-biggest turnaround in the league in 2010. He guided St. Louis' offense to improvements in nearly every category including total yards, time of possession and third-down percentage, while they also scored 114 more points than the previous year. In addition, the Rams committed just 21 turnovers in 2010, tied for the ninth-lowest total in the NFL.
Shurmur also made a tangible impact on Sam Bradford's immediate success as a rookie in 2010. The first-overall pick out of the University of Oklahoma set NFL rookie records for most consecutive passes without an interception (169) and most completions (354). Under Shurmur's tutelage, Bradford finished the season with a 60.0 completion percentage, 3,512 yards and 18 touchdown passes, winning the AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year Award.
Last season in Minnesota he took over for Turner halfway through and their offense improved from where it had been under Turner. This season he's basically been a miracle worker for that offense considering who they've had under the center and after losing their star rookie RB for the year.

How different were the offenses under Turner and Shurmur? The numbers speak for themselves.
The running game saw an improvement of a full yard per carry under Shurmur. In the first seven games, the team averaged just 2.7 yards a carry (189-503) and scored just three touchdowns. In the last nine games, the team averaged 3.7 yards a carry (191-702) with six TDs.
In seven games prior to Shurmur taking over the offense, Bradford completed 135 of 236 passes (66.5 percent) for 1,442 yards with eight touchdowns, one interception, 19 sacks and a passer rating of 98.2.
In the nine games with Shurmur running the show, he completed 260 of 349 passes (74.5 percent) for 2,435 yards with 12 touchdowns, four interceptions and a passer rating of 99.9.
On average, in the Turner offense, a typical game for Bradford was completing 19 of 29 passes for 206 yards. In his nine games with Shurmur running the offense, he averaged completing 29 of 39 passes for 271 yards. The difference in those averages was staggering, both in terms of attempts, completions, yards and completion percentage.
If you're a team with a young QB or a team that will be looking to draft a QB, you could certainly do worse than a guy like Shurmur, especially considering this current HC crop. Teams will look at Shurmur's overall history as an assistant in Philadelphia and how many young QB's have thrived under his coaching and I think he'll turn out to be a pretty popular candidate.

Thx 4 the correction.. Knew it sounded off. He actually did a great job with Bradford with the rams.
With a strong DC it could be solid marriage for someone.

A difference in QB rating of 1.7 is staggering? YPA under shurmer 6.9, under Turner 7.1. what?

An increase in 1 yard per rushing attempt, Bradford completing well over 70% of his passes and averaging almost 80 more yards passing per game with the same personnel and crappy OL, that is significant.

The NFL needs new blood, the good ole' boy club of rotating coaches and GM's is getting too old and stale.
All these guys are doing is jumping from team to team.

GM's don't often get a second gig after they've been fired from their first. On the other hand, coaches can be considerably better on their second go around than their first as we've seen with Mike Shanahan, Pete Carroll, Bill Belichick...etc.
In general the crop of head coaching candidates is pretty weak. McDaniels is far and away the top candidate, after that......who knows.

Josh might wanna seriously consider one of these gigs. No future behind Brady now and finding a FQB is no easy feat.
But tough spot for him if Darnold stays unless a team with a FQB comes calling after deciding to make a change(Indy, Houston, Oakland and potentially even Detroit).
