ICYMI - This might help to shed some light on the quickness at which Jerod Mayo was hired

"The New England Patriots announced that their linebackers coach, Jerod Mayo will replace Bill Belichick as their new Head Coach.
They reportedly did not consider anyone else for the position as Mayo apparently had it written into his contract that he would get the job.
It certainly explains the terse and perfunctory news conference from Belichick and Patriots owner Robert Kraft yesterday".

Yeah that's what I just posted about. I don't understand why he wasn't promoted to coordinator or something if that was in his contract.

Craft is a moron to agree to that contract. Welp looks like another year of s**tting the bed.

I mean we really don't know if it's a good or bad hire, only time will tell. We do know he has been interviewed for other jobs in the last couple of years

Perhaps the Pats know something we all don't about Mayo.

The Philadelphia Eagles were the first to host him for a head-coaching interview back in 2021, and Mayo "blew them out of the water," per NBC Sports Boston, only to be passed over for the offensively minded Nick Sirianni.

A year later, in the 2022 offseason, both the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders also interviewed Mayo for head-coaching vacancies. Denver ultimately traded for longtime New Orleans Saints coach Sean Payton, while Las Vegas hired Mayo's former Patriots colleague, Josh McDaniels. The Carolina Panthers tried to follow suit ahead of the 2023 season, but Mayo reportedly declined to interview, citing a desire to remain in New England. He later signed a contract extension with the Patriots that pointed to a potential succession of Belichick.

True we don't know if its a good or bad hire. But position coached who jump directly to a head coach don't have good track records of being successful hires. Who knows maybe Mayo is another DeMeco Ryans hiring, but IMO if you're gonna start over, START OVER. It's basically the same team minus the success of Belichick. But hopefully Mayo has a plan on offense, because that's a huge mess to begin with.

I guess we'll never know until, or if ever, Kraft Belichick/Kraft/Mayo decides to tell us … yet it seems as if this hiring has been in the works for a while

The not being a coordinator certainly raises questions., I have no doubt about that. But what if he's not another Demeco but what if maybe he's more of a Jim Harbaugh leader type who isn't good with Xs and Os but can motivate, lead and oversee as more of a CEO type.

He definitely needs a serious plan on offense and should probably think about making some staff changes on that side of the ball.

Seeing as the Pats didn't have a designated DC for the 2023 season, it's hard to figure out why Kraft didn't promote Jerod.
Was it a money-saving move keeping him as the LB Coach, or a non-move to not tip Kraft's hand for the future?

It's hard to tell, and I have a hard enough time keeping up with the 49ers, the NFCW, along with casually checking on the
Jets, Dolphins, and now the Texans

Crazy thing is, that was the argument about white coaches being promoted to HC without having been a coordinator.
So teams hired Siriani, Payton and McDaniels....freaking McDaniels instead of him after the interview.

Yeah if I was a Pats fan I'd be really worried about this.

The Broncos hired Vance Joseph instead of Kyle. Teams do dumb stuff all the time.

So you're telling me that Kraft is as stupid as Elway?

You don't have to be Einstein to realize that all of Belichik's assistants have been garbage as HC's.

The point is that you shouldn't bet on other teams knowing what they are doing. Mayo might turn out to be a terrible HC, he might turn out to be a good one, I'm not going to base that on the Raiders having passed on him once.

I'll welcome Dan Quinn to the division. Lol not worried about him at all as a HC. Especially since he doesnt have a franchise qb.

This division will be tough as hell next year - 49ers & rams are legit playoff teams. Arizona is trending up big time, Seahawks have talent but the worst qb of
the bunch

Agreed. He's a much better DC than HC and that move weakens Dallas.
Maybe Kyles Ball Boy can get poached for a Head Coaching job.
