Joseph, to me, is the prototype of a coordinator who does not have it to be a successful HC

Steve Spagnuolplo. Guy can't even get an interview in spite of having top tier championship defenses for years.

Because he's 11-41 as a head coach. That's a brutal reputation to overcome.

And he is exactly in the best possible spot for his reputation and career. I doubt Spagnuolo is itching to go elsewhere, soon.

A lot of things have to go right for any HC, more so a defensive-oriented HC to last long in the NFL. Mainly needs a legit FQB and OC.

He has earned tremendous respect from the league, so there is always the chance he will become a HC again.

But some coaches are great coordinators and lousy HCs.

Spag may feel too old to give coaching another try.

but Dan Quinn is on his way to revitalizing the idea of giving a failed defensive coach another chance

A good example, as DQ appears to have the FQB question figured out in DC. It's early days but there seems to be some synergy building over there.

History has proven that HC's ascended from DC can succeed, it's just tougher without the FQB (+ a consistent system) and their leash is shorter.
