Continuity would be nice, for once.

These days, success means a revolving door. It's a tricky problem.

If I were a GM I wouldn't hire Saleh to be a head coach, though. That Jets tenure was pretty bad. Might be better off sticking with the DC role. You still make a bag doing that work.

i thought Saleh did well with the Jets. now where that went south, they chained him to Zach Wilson then too old Rodgers. i doubt Saleh made the call on either. they stuck him with miserable QBs.

Well, if he does make that mistake (Deion to Dallas) we will at least know who he is going to draft.

FWIW Dak has a 104 million dollars dead cap hit and a no trade clause.

Jerry won't care!

Going to have to... but they can likely work around this. Need Dak to agree to re-work the deal a little to make it more manageable on their cap hit and to ok waiving his no trade clause but that would give Dak a say in his next team.

The Cowboys can't rework Dak's deal to make his dead money cap hit more manageable than it is now. All they can do is rework new/future spending. Dead money cap hits are composed of already spent money whose scheduled cap allocations have accelerated immediately because the contract with the team was terminated. Dak's aforementioned 104M in dead cap is composed from the cap allocations:
  • 13.2M - 2021 signing bonus proration x1 - Prorated over 5 years.
  • 1.25M - 2021 restructure proration x1 - Salary to Signing Bonus conversion prorated over 5 years.
  • 7.36M - 2022 restructure proration x2 - Salary to Signing Bonus conversion prorated over 5 years.
  • 14.65M - 2023 restructure proration x2 - Salary to Signing Bonus conversion prorated over 4 years.
  • 4M - 2024 restructure proration x4 - Roster Bonus to Signing Bonus conversion prorated over 5 years.
  • 74M - 2024 signing bonus proration x4 - Prorated over 5 years.
Dak has his 2025 salary of 47.75M already guaranteed. His 2026 salary (40M) guarantees on March 16th, 2025. His 2027 salary (45M) guarantees on the 5th day of the league year in 2026. 17M of his 2028 salary guarantees on the 5th day of the league year in 2027. These guarantees would be taken over by the new club if he's traded. The Cowboys would be on the hook for any remaining guaranteed money if he's released.

The options the Cowboys have are
  1. Keep Dak on the roster and take on the unaccounted for cap hits as scheduled;
  2. Move on from Dak pre-6/1 and eat the entire dead money cap hit in a single year; or
  3. Move on from Dak post-6/1 (or designate him for 6/1 release) and split the dead money cap hit. Year 1 of the split only accounts for dead money from that year. Year 2 of the split accounts for the remainder of the dead money. If Dak were traded post-6/1, the Cowboys would take a dead money cap hit of 42M in 2025 and 62M in 2026.

The no trade clause is essentially a right of refusal for the player. So Dak already has a say.

Ty for the Dead Cap info, good to know.

Ben Johnson is using the media to pit Chicago Bears, Las Vegas Raiders and Jacksonville Jaguars against each other

The Chicago Bears are getting played by one of their top head coach candidates.

Have you noticed that in each of the last two hiring cycles, reporters have been able to tell us seemingly everything Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson is thinking?

It could be that the top insiders all have great sources close to Johnson that are willing to leak them information at Johnson's expense.

Or, Ben Johnson himself (perhaps through his agent) is giving that information to insiders intentionally to create more leverage for the up-and-coming coach as he's courted for head coaching opportunities.

And with the Lions about to lose, all of the head coaching dominoes should start to fall.
IMO Johnson should go to Chicago. Does he really wanna compete with Mahomes, Nix, and Herbert? I suppose he'd get to pick his own new QB, but..

Why not go to a team that went toe to toe with Detroit despite bad coaching. Bears only need OL improvement.

I'd say it's between them and the Raiders.

He should go to Jacksonville.

If he wins 10 games per season there he'll have a job for life and he'll be playing in the worst division of the league.

I would touch that mess in Las Vegas no way!!! I'd go to Jacksonville where I'd have a young veteran QB to start with. All he would need to do is build that running game. Lets not forget about Brian Thomas Jr. another young playmaker to work with. Easiest turnaround in the NFL, trade down and take Ashton Jeanty!!!
