They dont count screens, and they probably don't count short routes (shallow crossers, quick slants, etc). It looks like they're only counting literal checkdowns to RBs in this stat.

The 4.8 yards avg depth of completion in 2016 paints a much better picture of the pop warner passing of Alex Smith.

I used to hear the same sort of comments about Joe Montana. Back in the day, Dan Marino was your big armed static qb. Joe seemed to turn out ok though.

Huge difference between how offenses were back then compared to now. When Marino threw for 5k yards that was amazing, now even an above average QB can throw for 5k, Eli, Stafford...if Montana played today he would be having 5k passing yards almost every year, especially if he was on a good team.

The reference was to the average pass not his total yardage.

Point still stands. He would have better stats in whatever passing category you want to throw out.

I have no doubt about that. Him with Rice and currrnt rules would have utterly destroyed the record books.

But the pop warner or dink and dunk comments about Smith are amusing and ironic coming from fans of Walsh's 49ers.

During Montana's Super Bowls , his avg depth of pass was 9.6 yards . That's 100% more than Alex in 2016

You still hear the same things about Brady, but Brady and Montana are not the same as Alex lol. Brady and Montana are/were surgical in the way they pick defenses apart. They aren't a one (2 if you're lucky) read then panic and checkdown/bail QB like Alex is. Alex does not have the field vision, accuracy, or pocket awareness of Montana/Brady.

I've gotten the sense that Alex can do whatever he wants to a defense maybe 2 or 3 times in his entire career, where as you feel/felt that the majority of time watching Brady/Montana.

1. Bortles 11.2%
2. Kizer 10.4
3. Eli Manning 10.2
4. Osweiler 9.7
5. Brissett 9.3
6. Alex Smith 9.1
6. Flacco 9.1
8. Tyrod Taylor 8.7
8. Rivers 8.7
10. Carr 8.4

Bortles is officially captain check down

How is Smith not #1 at 80%? Can someone explain?

Lol. You never disappoint.
Never ceases to amaze how how many people still feel compelled to bash Alex. IMHO had he not gotten hurt when Harbaugh was HC he would've been in the playoffs several times. We'll never know for sure. No, he's not Brady, Montana or any of the other all-time greats. So what. He is, however, one of the toughest QB's of this era. I'll never forget him waving to the crowd after his horrendous injury last year...had a smile on his face when you know he had to be in excruciating pain. He's a winner, whether he has any SB rings on his fingers or not. Stop this nonsense, comparing him to the great QB's. He's not among them. Get over it.

x2

The painstaking and detailed research has reached its apex.
This is the only place on the planet Niner fans are willing compare Joe Montana's game to Alex Smith's.
Most deep passing yards (20+yard throws) in a season (2016-18):

1. 2018 Patrick Mahomes 1514
2. 2016 Kirk Cousins 1359
3. 2017 Alex Smith 1344
4. 2016 Drew Brees 1250
5. 2016 Russell Wilson 1199
^Makes sense. Alex absolutely balled out for 2/3 of that season. Best he has ever played.

You can do that when you surround a QB with some decent weapons. The most impressive name on the list is Willow. He gets it done with less than any of the others.

Scramble scramble scramble. Then chuck it up. His receivers always come down with it.

Lol. Pairing the best TE with the best deep threat of all time, and the top rushing RB is "decent"? That's been the best offense for 2 years now lmao, and they were better without Alex.

You might as well replace Alex's name on that list with Tyreek Hill. Alex was just chucking it anytime he saw single coverage on Hill. Any QB can do that. We saw Alex without Hill last year, I'm not sure he even completed a deep pass in his 10 games last year, absolutely awful.

Extending plays with athletic ability is something every QB in the nfl wish they had. Throwing accurate deep balls isnt bad thing either. Crazy how ppl still hate on him, almost as crazy as the hate in this thread
