If they cut him, the Redskins are still obligated to pay him the guarantee.

If they cut him this year, they are still on the hook for $15,000,000 in guaranteed salary plus a $52,600.000 dead money hit.

It they cut him in 2020, they owe him $16,000,000 in guaranteed salary, plus a $32,200,000 dead money hit.

After that, the guarantee is all paid, but there is a $10,800,000 dead money hit in 2021, along with a smaller hit in 2022.

That's why I said 1st chance they get. Obviously cap factors in. But he's not going to be the starting with Haskins there so

he'll never be a starting Quarterback in the NFL ever again. period.

Uh. If he is healthy, he will be somewhere. Pro Bowl QBs don't grow on trees. Yeah, OK, maybe he won't play like a Pro Bowler when he returns, but there are plenty of teams I'm sure that would love to have him at that point if he's healthy.

didnt say he wouldnt be somewhere. i said he won't ever be a starter. ever. again.
My .02:

  • I doubt Smith will be a starting QB (i.e., first string starter) again.
  • If healthy, I could see him being signed in a mentor/backup role as a #2 QB.
  • He should hang it up and focus on life after playing in the NFL.
  • Smith would be a good coach.
  • I wish this thread would get locked.

Not willing to say he won't be a starter again. Not when guys like Fitzpatrick, Tyrod Taylor, Flacco, Keenum, Dalton, Bortles, Tannehill, Winston were starting in recent years.

We'll see. Never say never. Until I read the headlines "Alex Smith retiring" or "Alex Smith relegated to veteran backup" -- I feel like I can't write off the chance he'll start again somewhere. There are other starters older than him these days.

It's cloudy. It's an uphill battle. Lots of "if he can do this or that" and such. Just gonna wait 'n see. I know he wants to play, so hopefully things work out so he can.

With nearly 400 posts in this thread, it would leave a big hole in your life if this thread were locked.

Smith would be a very good QB coach. He has seen a multitude of systems and defenses. That knowledge would be worth a lot to any team with a young QB, or even a vet who had never had good coaching.

Closing it has been discussed among mods and the decision was clearly to keep it open. It wasn't, and has never been, my call.

I agree. Smith rose from the ashes of Ryan Leaf to a solid starting QB under Harbaugh, and an MVP candidate in KC. He has solidified himself as top ten by being in the driver seat to win the East on a HORRENDOUS roster, one of the worst in the NFL. Leading that offensive core to a playoff birth was simply remarkable. That sealed his career. He is much better than Kirk Cousins for example who is considered a good QB by many, but couldn't get arguably the best roster in the NFL in the playoffs. I'm glad we can all finally agree: Smith >>>> Cousins

Smith is not a HOFer, and is still pretty conservative, but he has amazed the NFL in the past by rising out of the ashes. He may do it again. Wouldn't count him out, but I don't think he'll suit up again. He is getting paid a lot so he is rehabbing. I highly doubt he comes back

Some of you agree. Not all.
