Why did the D start laying turds this year after being respectable in the recent past?

For starters . Eric Berry was hurt. No Marcus Peters. Tamba Hali is gone.

Houston hasn't been the same player.

Wrong. The answer is Alex Smith plays defense

That's what I was waiting for

Team has been having health issues for the last few years. Offense may have been upgraded with the extra room Alex's salary gave, but not much was done on a defense that has older players. Injuries weren't as bad as last year, but enough to keep them out of the big game.

Kudos to Mahomes for having an amazing year as the starter. I think he's only going to get better.

In an article from a KC writer this morning, it detailed three young defensive players that disappointed this year. (There is somewhat of a 49er flavor to it.)

First of all, Breeland Speaks, there top pick (#46) last year was a square peg/round hole problem. He was a defensive lineman that Sutton tried to turn into an edge defender...and he failed miserably. 24 total tackles and 1.5 sacks.

Tanoh Kpassagnon had just the opposite problem but similar results. He was oversized at edge but was kept there all season instead of being inside where he played in college. By the end of the season and playoffs, he was a healthy scratch.

Both of these guys being misused certainly did not help Bob Sutton's case to stay as DC.

Anthony Hitchens, a favorite of some in the FA/trade thread for the 49ers last offseason, was also a disappointment. He made a lot of tackles but very few had any real impact on the game. Too many were made 5-8 yards down field instead of around the LOS where they needed to be made. He wasn't an impact player in Dallas and wasn't for KC either. A very expensive FA lesson for a team trying to get younger on defense.

In short, as key players got old, the younger ones they planned on did not do well.

Also, cap issues have restricted them.

I disagree here. They had the money to go out and pick up Sammy Walkins and Anthony Hitchens.

Chiefs haven't ignored defense as much as some make it out to be. Watkins was the only major addition on offense and he's only played 43 percent of snaps, 519 yards and 3 of mahomes 50 TDS. Damien was added as a back up and has filled Hunts shoes so far. It's still debatable who's the better Rb though. Most would lean towards Hunt at this point.

On defense they tried. Spent money on Hitchens, traded for nickel back fuller . Spent every one of their draft picks on defense. They tried hard to fix the defense. They just failed. It happens.

Much of that was Smith money along with releasing Derek Johnson and retirement of Hali.

The cap issues came before those guys left and the trade was made. They tried to go draft but Speaks and Kpassagnon were big disappointments, which made the cap problems more vexing.

Williams has proven to be a better runner, so far. More power. Hunt was a greater receiving threat.

Fuller was an upgrade from Peters but that still left them with Nelson and Parker on the back end and both were liabilities.

The defensive failures are widespread. They are telling their fans that Sutton was a large part of that. Time will tell.

You might think he's better, and he might end up better but no he hasn't proven to be better. He played like 5 games. Hunt played 27 games and had proven to be one of the best RBs in the league.

Are you sure Fuller is an upgrade from Peters? Big statement there.

Yes, it is a small sample with Williams but his average in those games was 5.1 to Hunt's 4.6. The eye test shows Williams to get more YAC in those games.

PFF ranks Fuller #30. Peters is #95. No matter what one may think of PFF that is a huge difference.

In another thread there were several clips of Peters in run defense. No effort at all.
