Cutting Hali is a given at this point. His knees are shot. He could not even play on turf fields last season. The guy is a candidate for at least one early knee replacement.

Johnson may stay as a backup but his $8M cap number is a problem. Cutting him would allow money to re-sign Kevin Pierre-Louis who played quite well last season.

Dee Ford's back is another problem. He played so little last season that he may not even pass his physical. They desperately need to improve their pass rush but Ford has just not been reliable at all.

They will need to fix some problems in FA if they can but all three of these guys will have to go in order to do much. To make matters worse, since losing Dontari Poe, the front line has not had a consistent run stopper.

The season for Andy Reid's crew is going to have to rely on a super-productive offense because the defense is suspect.

With the investments they made on defense the past several years it was disappointing to have them decline so much, and so quickly. You are correct that they have a number of top guys, elite at their positions, who need to be replaced. It reminds me of the niners having to replace Willis, A Smith and J Smith all in a two year span. Two of those guys might be HofF guys...and Aldon could have been had he kept his head on straight. Johnson and Hali aren't quite as good but close and just as important to their team. Will the young guys step up? Haven't shown it yet. Their greatest problem might be DBs, where they have a head case as their best CB, two injury questions at safety and two niner rejects backing up the mess.

No more excuses for Andy Reid, thats for sure.

It didnt seem like players were happy with the AS move.

They better hope they hit on Mahomes.

I was a bit surprised at the positive comments. Usually players talk about the next guy up. It reinforces the idea that Smith is a high character guy respected by his teammates.

For Berry's sake, and the other vets, hope Mahomes takes them to a SB. I like a lot of the players on KC's team and for the most part Reid.

Yes, there was a lot of support and respect paid him after the trade.

Most of them realized the cap situation the team was in and that there was not choice, really. The option to keep him another year to mentor Mahomes was just no possible.

They'll never get to the SB with Reid as coach. He has to go.
I can't believe they let Peters go.
Looks like the Chiefs are going into full re-build mode.

Word this morning is that Brett Veach has all but admitted Albert Wilson will follow former Chiefs OC Matt Nagy to Chicago.

Veteran DL Allen Bailey also appears bound for FA. He's not quite good enough to spend limited cap money on.

When Niner fans look at the mess KC is in they can once again say a huge "thank you" to Marathe for keeping the 49ers out of salary cap hell.

This is so insane to me. Their window is still open. Never heard of a team doing a full on rebuild after being back to back division champions. Especially when they will be getting their best defensive player back.

Bunch of monkeys running that organization.

eh, KC was doing it with smoke and mirrors on defense last season. That is why the Peters trade is so perplexing. All the rumored "Monday through Saturday" stuff must have been really bad to cut him loose.

That having been said, even with Justin Houston they needed another OLB. Hali is done and so is Ford (back). Dereck Johnson is done although Kevin Pierre-Paul looked adequate though not great as a replacement. Ron Parker was BAD at safety and has been cut. Their DL front has been ineffective since Poe went to Atlanta.

In short, John Dorsey spent them into salary cap hell and they have no room, even with the Smith trade to attract any quality in FA. To make matters worse, they hocked the farm to move up for Mahomes (two 1st and a 3rd). As a result, the combination of no cap room and very limited draft picks put them in a bad way. They had to trade Smith to gain cap room and Peters to get draft picks.

As I said, bad situation.

Agree! They were between some very good, but broken down veterans and some very good young guys on the way up. Rebuilding now shortens the time it will take. If Mahomes is the real deal they could be pretty good this year and then SB bound next year. Hill, Kelce, Conley, Hunt...some good fire power if they stay healthy! OL has been rebuilding for a couple of years as well. Once again...depends on health--Morse in particular. This line is just reaching the maturation age--25-28 year old--and will have a number of years together.

Cap losses in the OL have really hurt them in the past 4 yours. Albert, Stephenson, Hudson - those three guys alone crippled them. Reid was forced to compensate with an offense that put the least pressure possible on the OL. If the group that finished the season, plus Morse, can stay healthy all year, they will help Mahomes and the run game a lot. The trouble this past season was that when Morse went out, Fulton moved to center which is not his best spot, and Witzmann went in a LG (think Laken Tomlinson of a bad day).

They do have the weapons you noted although there was talk last week that Conley may be cut. His grade this past season was "replacement." Hill is awesome but he is not a good route runner. They need that reliable guy like a Garcon in order to max out the weaponry.
Makes sense to get Watkins. They lost Kelce against the Titans the downward spiral begins. No size to anyone catching the ball.
Damn

Looks like you were wrong, sir. No rebuild for the Chiefs this year. Anthony Hitchens was a nice move for them as well.

I don't think the 49ers ever had a guy quite like this... the closest I can remember may be Charles Haley, and that dude had to piss off Jerry Rice to get traded.
