I don't see that at all. Cliff Avril's bread and butter was his speed rush. He was a screamer off the edge and had a smoldering 1.50 10-yard split(I believe that's the all-time best) at the combine. I can't see Ferrell sniffing that number on his best day. Ferrell has stiffness in his lower body that Avril didn't.

Ferrell is a lot closer to someone like Terrell Suggs that uses his hands, moves, and a mature pass-rush plan to get home.

Yup. The kind of skillset a team can use for 10 + years :-). The next two weeks will be 2 of the most important of this regime. Three straight games against the Cardinals, Raiders, and Giants, all important for draft position. While I don't think we are in competition with the Giants or Cardinals for players, these two teams almost HAVE to go offense (QB for the Giants in particular), draft positioning will be critical. If we actually do sweep all 3, then things will get really interesting.

I'm going to make a bold prediction that we will lose to at least one of those three teams.

I meant in terms of their body type, not necessarily play style. Ferrell is certainly explosive off the edge though, but I have concerns on whether or not he can carry over his college success to the NFL.
Does anyone have the # of offside penalties Ferrell has incurred? One thing I've noticed while watching him is that he's a big-time snap jumper. It's partly why his get off is so good.

Ball hasn't been snapped, and he's already crossed the neutral zone. I actually like that he's trying to get an edge. Keep doing it until they call it.

It was one of the first things I noticed too that I dinged him for. Snap jumping in the NFL will get you in trouble. Don't go up there guessing..

I guess we'll have to wait for the Combine to get a more accurate decision but I'd say definitely top 10.
I think his gonna test poorly which might hurt his stock.
If we somehow win a couple more games this is a nice guy to consider even with the reported down season.

I don't think he's had a down season at all. He has 7 sacks and 11.5 TFL so far this season through 8 games. He had 9 sacks and 18 TFL in 14 games last year. If anything, now that Trevor Lawrence has taken over at QB, Clemson is killing people Bama-style, and the second and third teamers are getting a ton of snaps (btw....the best DE on the team might be true freshman and former #3 overall recruit Xavier Thomas who looks like a Clowney with a motor). Clemson is making a conscious effort to substitute liberally, but his production is still there in somewhat limited action.

These are Clemson's defensive national rankings:

  • Scoring 1
  • Total 3
  • Rushing 7
  • Passing 23
  • TFL 3
  • Third Down Conversion Against 5
  • Sacks 8
I agree that hes not having a down year, its just everyone expected it from him, so theres no hype. Polite, Allen, and to a lesser extent Burns and Sweat have been flying up draft boards, and have such been taking all of the excitement.

As an aside, it's too bad were not gonna be bad enough to have a shot at Xavier Thomas in two years

What are you seeing that makes you feel that he will test poorly?
