Clelin Ferrell, DE Clemson

I don't think he is a first-round player, because those Clemson defensive ends bust all the time. [Bills defensive end] Shaq Lawson went 19th overall, and he's been a complete bust. Ferrell is a similar player, similar athlete, but he plays harder. I gave Shaq Lawson a fourth round grade, Ferrell is a little better than him. But from the sheer tools, they are very similar. There are certain schools where positions have a high bust rate and all Clemson defensive ends are productive, they get a ton of unblocked production in that scheme no matter who they line up there. I like Clellin a lot more than some of those guys and I think he is going to be a good solid pro, but you don't draft a good solid pro in the top 10."

Kiper's most recent big board:
18. Clelin Ferrell, DE, Clemson*
Height: 6-5 | Weight: 265 | Previously: 19
I thought Ferrell could have been a first-round pick in the 2018 draft as a third-year sophomore. He's that good. He had 9.5 sacks last season and has 10.5 this season. He terrorized Texas A&M and Georgia Southern with two sacks apiece and multiple pressures. Clemson has one of the most talented defensive lines I've ever seen in college football, and Ferrell is the top prospect.

People in this thread are hating on this kid because....?? He's not Allen or Bosa? Not everybody can go 1st overall folks.

Considering we have to knock this pick out of the park we should be very nitpicky. Ferrell does some really good things but he's a tough evaluation for the NFL.

I'm weary that his knee won't hold up. He had an ACL injury in high school.

Tough eval? He's a lock 1st rounder.
I'm not advocating to take Ferrell. I just don't understand what's different this year than all the other top 10 picks we've had to make. We've always had to knock it out of the park. Every team drafting in the top 10 has to find a star.

That stuff will be heavily vetted in the offseason. ACL injuries are of no secret to NFL medical teams.

There's way too much hype about Bosa...he's good, no doubt, but if you look at his numbers last year and this, they really don't jump off the charts. Also have to wonder if like his brother Joey, he'll be injury prone. He's coming off a core muscle injury and that's not really good. That said, I like Ferrell for several reasons...size, 6-5, 265, quickness (4.77 X 40), production (10.5 sacks & 13 TFL in 2018). He's also a key part of one of the country's top defenses, so it's in his DNA, so to speak. Lastly, he's a guy Lynch can still get later in the 1st (depending on who the trading team is) or early 2nd by taking the best offer for what's looking more & more to be the #1 pick.
Let's pass on the consensus #1 overall pick who is an edge rusher because the stats say that we should gamble on a top 15-20 pick still being there in the early 2nd.

Bosa was also a part timer as Meyer elected to go with veteran starters. His productivity per snap was among the highest in college football.

I have no idea what this means. The last few DEs from similar top Clemson defenses have been busts or disappointing players in the NFL. Their college success was clearly meaningless when it came to determining their pro success.
Ferrell projects out to potentially being a good DE in the NFL. Bosa like his brother before him projects out to an All Pro level ceiling. On a team short on true star level players, he appears to be exactly what they need.

I hear ya...the other problem I have with taking Bosa with the #1 or 2 pick (if the Raiders somehow squeak ahead of us) is after that Lynch only has 4 other picks to make. He could make some deals to get more picks...and I hope he does. If not, though, the best way to get more quality picks is to trade down. I can't blame Ferrell for being as good as he is, despite what some other Clemson DL have done in the NFL. You could actually make a similar statement WRT lack of NFL success for a good number of 'Bama DL. I don't think that's a sound reason for not taking a player Lynch believes will give Buckner some real help, though. Taking Ferrell's predicated on my hope Lynch signs DT Malcolm Brown (Pats). Ferrell sure looks to have the goods to make an impact at DE...his return to Clemson this season has helped his overall game. The games I saw him play this year he'd definitely improved vs the run while still getting in the backfield for sacks or TFL. Either he or Bosa aren't enough alone to make much of an impact if Lynch doesn't significantly strengthen the interior of the DL, IMHO.

Taking the best prospect in the draft is a good problem to have. If you have that opportunity, you make the pick and worry about the rest later. You can always trade down here and there to acquire a couple more picks.
At some point you need quality over just quantity. You need those gamechanging superstars. You need great rather than good enough.
if Lynch doesn't significantly strengthen the interior of the DL,
So you're going to pass up on the best player in the draft in the hopes of acquiring a nose tackle? Because Buckner appears pretty well entrenched at 3T. He isn't going anywhere. Nose tackles can be found all over the place. Dominant edge rushers, not as much.
