He was a pretty good player in Minnesota but could never take the leap to becoming a real good player and a difference maker. Hopefully that changes in SF
I blame most of his lack of production on Minnesota pushing touches to Peterson and Norv Turner. Like Boise said, CRIMINALLY underused. His athleticism and strength are off the charts, check his combine numbers. The rank is for overall that year, not RB class... Link
Event Stat Rank
Broad Jump 11'0" T-2nd
Vertical Jump 40'5" 3rd
Bench Press 32 reps T-8th
40-yard dash 4.41 6th
Looks like he can toss the ball too as a triple option QB in college. I can see kyle running the read-option with thus guy.

Yeah, Lewis was the better deal. 31 million for 3.8 ypc with marginal pass pro skills.

Yup dude will be used as a receiver just as much as a RB. As long as they draft a bigger back I'm totally fine with the signing. give me Royce Freeman in the 4th and I'll be a happy man.

Some notable comments from Vikings fans

One of my favorite Vikings. Really hate to see him leave but he deserves the chance to be the starter. That just wasn't going to happen in Minnesota.

Sad day for Vikings fans, Jet is a class act. 49ers are getting a guy with heart and he's still just a young kid at 25. I wouldn't be surprised if he turns into a 1,000 yard back. Best of luck Jerick!

This is a good pickup for SF, and I hate to see him leave Minnesota. The Vikings knew how to get the most production out of him without wearing him down.
McKinnon is a very good third-down, pass-catching and change of pace back. What he is not is a guy who can run inside and break tackles. In other words, he's not a feature back who can handle 300 carries in a season. I hope for the sake of McKinnon and the 49ers that the latter has figured that out.

Sorry to see the Vikings lose this guy, who is very talented and versatile. SF is a very smart franchise now, and is building a contender quickly. As long as McKinnon can withstand the pounding of steady duty, he will pan out very well and help this team make the playoffs this year.

Good luck in the future JM. Good player. Dangerous in space with the ability to make big flash plays. Beware though… He falls to the ground with the lightest touch. A lot of negative runs that didn't have much to do with the o-line play.

Wish him the best, Jet is one hell of a player.

Solid RB, just never had much of a line here in MN. Great guy, runs really hard, very elusive, great pass catcher. Will be missed here but this kid deserves a chance to be "the guy". SF is making some really good moves.

A good player and person. I think he can still get better, he has big time speed and has shown he is a very good receiver. Needs to learn to become a more patient runner and see holes better but I think he will do really good in San Fran. Class act. Thanks Jet!

I love Carlos, but there was one play that stands out last year where Shanny called a play that got Carlos wide open deep.....and Carlos dropped the ball.
So yeah Shanny wants his players, and his rb is one who is able to catch that type of pass in that type of situation.

With Mckinnon, I don't think we need to sign another WR at this point. He basically is one to.

That's my thinking, and also they have the draft coming up. I can see them going after a Legarret Blount kind of RB guy in the draft that can catch out of the backfield like Juzkuzik.

Oh what?! Are you serious? McKinnon is worth for 7.5 millions than Hyde? Wow.. McKinnon should get 3.5 millions than 7.5 millions.

Dude. You literally said "you don't give someone 30 million to split carries."
I said you dont give someone 30M to give him 150 carries which is what he did in Minnesota. Not that he would be getting 250 carries in SF.

I'm good with our receivers and guys like Juice and McJet.
A move TE would be nice.

That play is just scheme beating scheme in the chess match.
I'm not against the Jet signing, but there's not a single thing in that play that points to any special talent or ability on his part.
I mean, he didn't drop a wide open pass without any defenders within 10 yards of him, sure, but you didn't need McKinnon to find someone who can do that.

Not a fan of signing unless he learns to follow his blocks and stop running horizontal
ZBS is all about running horizontal.
