If they put him on IR it's the same as if he were on the team.

To release him while injured McKinnom would have to agree with it in the form of a settlement - a la what we did with what's his butt, the NT who hurt his ankle a couple years ago.

Then, any monies paid out(including signing bonus) would count against this year.

That's how it would work I understand it correctly. You can't just release an injured player. So, the team would have to be willing to eat a large amount of salary. Doesn't make too much sense to me.
