Mediocre signing. Better than Hyde as a pass catcher so we will see. KS whiffed on Joe Williams, so hopefully this guy offers some actual production.

Define "whiff"

Wasn't an All-Pro, Pro Bowler, and Rookie of the Year with 2,000 yards and 22 TDs. What a damn bust.

I blame most of his lack of production on Minnesota pushing touches to Peterson and Norv Turner. Like Boise said, CRIMINALLY underused. His athleticism and strength are off the charts, check his combine numbers. The rank is for overall that year, not RB class... Link

Event Stat Rank
Broad Jump 11'0" T-2nd
Vertical Jump 40'5" 3rd
Bench Press 32 reps T-8th
40-yard dash 4.41 6th

It's not just Peterson. Even without Peterson he lost the starting job to Matt Asiata, and then the Vikings spent a first round pick and FA money on Latavius Murray at the position because they still didn't think of him as a starting back.

Nobody debates that McKinnon is a heck of an athlete, the question is if he's above average as a football player.

I think the Better Rivals guys are amazingly good at what they do, but in this case IMO they've allowed themselves to get romanced by his testing numbers. SPARQ IMO, is good for setting floors, but getting all excited because guys who aren't very good football players have high SPARQ scores is the 21st Century version of the Al Davis draft strategy.

Thing is, he's not being signed to run between the tackles. He's being signed to get outside or cut back at speed through a gap.
For the love of god people stop looking at it as him being JUST a RB. he's a OW ( a real one) he's not gonna be a 1K RB he's gonna be a 1,200 line of scrimmage guy which is huge in today's game.

team him up with a Royce Freeman and we're gonna be very dangerous.

Didn't take a whole page even.

If McKinnon had low his rush at 600 to 800 yards this season? Then we must cut him in next year! If McKinnon must get 1,500 yards between 2,000 yards this season. I will be satisfied it.

Lol at anyone here who thinks they are smarter as it pertains to football minds than what we have in KS and the 49ers' FO. They have a plan and I trust them.

I feel they have a plan in place for the draft.

My dream draft

I'm all aboard the Freeman train now with McKinnon

Meh. At first glance it seems like a whole lot of money for a guy who is a tremendous athlete and very good special teams performer but lacks the vision and decisiveness of top RBs although he is now being paid like one.

You will be able to find guys like this in the draft for far less money, especially in a year where the draft is absolutely stacked with RBs.

Out of all the moves ShanaLynch have made, this one makes the least amount of sense to me. That much money for a guy who realistically is a #2 RB?

I have to agree with you here. I'm not sure McKinnon even negates the teams need for a RB in the upcoming draft either, he's more of a situational runner on 1st and 2nd downs anyways. They must like his versatility to split out, play 3rd down, and special teams. Highest risk contract they've given out IMO.

I guess neither Matt Breida nor Joe WIlliams (?) impressed them enough to deserve another shot. This signing effectively tanks their aspirations of playing RB for the 49ers.

He's an athlete playing RB versus an athletic RB.

People thought Hyde was indecisive? This dude is an East-West running legend.

I liked him a lot coming out in the draft due to his versatility and athleticism, thought he could be a pretty good special teams player and returner while contributing at RB, but as a #1 RB?

He's actually so mindlessly running he is an extreme north/south runner. He doesn't adjust his run to what has happened. He goes right to hole even if it is closed and 4 feet over is an actual hole. I've watched so many Vikings games and even remarked on how he runs to Vikings fans during games. And they agreed.

Where would you rate his ability on blitz pickup? Below average?

The key there is you want a guy who is decisive and does not hesitate. That isn't McKinnon from what I've seen so I'm really confused by the fit as anything more than a change of pace back but you can find a change of pace back for a lot less than $7+ mil a year, especially this year.
