Dare I say it...how about Joe Williams coming back? I already dislike Ward and AA as weak minded players that can't seem to stay on the field consistently. However:
1) He knows Shanahan's system, which apparently is a big issue in bringing in a player on short notice
2) The coaching staff thought he was going to compete well this year and was just derailed by a couple of smaller injuries that should heal soon
3) It wasn't like McKinnon looked any better running the ball than Joe Williams in the early pre-season games, so it might have been the line that was the issue and Joe might actually be decent if given the chance with the starting OL.
4) We've already spent all this time keeping him on the team, so what do we have to lose?

I think he was always gonna be more about the 50 catches out of the backfield. I had hoped for a stat line of 650-700 yards rushing and 60-70 catches for over 600 yards. So that would have been like a 1300 yards total yardage type back.
for him to get 60-70 catches, he would have to be the 1st down 2nd down and 3rd down back. with Morris and Breida, he probably would've only played about 40-50% of the snaps.

I think Joe would be the front runner for the spot. I'm sure they have a few guys theyre scouting that got cut and their doing some due diligence. Unless there was some big falling out, Joe would be a seamless transition back to the roster. He still needs to heal up, but he makes a lot of sense.

It's very feasible. In clear passing situations he'd be on the field. He's also get plenty drives where he's the guy. James White in NE pulls it off and he's not an every down guy.

He hasn't played a down for us and you're already giving up on him. Not surprised. The hate is thick in here.

AINT no hate brah... just my personal opinion.. ...
Just last year, I did not agree on giving our FB all that millions either... and as good as he was or he is, did we not over pay the guy???
We had a similar talented back up this year and saw him all pre-season... #46 looked good, it makes me wonder what our FB can do that this kid could not....
as for the JET... whatever nickname or who ever he is... I don't hate the guy, I just didn't like the amount of money we gave to him??
Is that wrong??
What's he ever done to deserve that??

We needed a receiver out of the backfield and that's exactly what he was brought in to do. Kyle is going to rotate guys regardless. We just need our receiver and I hope Brieda can be that guy. Morris has never shown that ability.
The money was the real sticking point with McKinnon. That's where all the dislike stems from. About him being too fragile to carry the ball 20+ times, I don't think that was ever the plan. Lynch and Kyle were trying to buy a guy that was dangerous in space and a chain mover, not a bellcow. He would've been a key part of the rotation, not a franchise RB.
Continuing with the money aspect, McKinnon probably won't be in the top-10 after another year of RBs getting paid and surely far removed after another year. He's making 7.5M/yr. Duke Johnson and Hyde both signed for over 5M/yr. Deon Lewis is right there too. We decided (thanks to the Jets overbidding everyone) to pay a little more for a guy we thought would have a major impact; whereas, we have Ward who makes more and won't contribute much and surely won't have an impact. In 2 years and assuming McKinnon is still here, he'll be making half what the elite RBs are making and less than plenty of mediocre backs. We struck early in the rising RB market, got a 4-yr deal, and front loaded it for the future.
Good post.
You're correct about McKinnon being a hybrid adds an element that was lacking. No defense could game plan for him because he had the ability to take it to the house either on a run or a pass. He would give Kyle an option on every play - just like Kyle wants. He was likely to get 16-20 touches/game with 4-6 of them being receptions. Breida/Morris would share another 12-15. That is the way Kyle operates it.
On the money side, in terms of guaranteed money, he is #10 right now. Next year he will likely drop to 13-15, depending on what top rookie RBs receive. After that, who knows? The point is, he is only over-paid if one considers him strictly a running back. He is not that. He is more. Too bad we won't see it until next season.

He got $11.7 million guaranteed....let's stop acting like he's getting $30 million.

Just not happy with this signing. We've whiffed on RBs for a few years now.
