We overpaid big time for this guy. But whatever, lets see what he can do in Shanny's offense.

Only took 30 pages for some people to start making up things to fit their narrative. Thought we'd get to 50. Honestly, impressed.

Hyde was a liability in pass pro. he took a lot of plays off. Shanny put in Breida many times after Hyde missed blocks.

Could have just drafted Freeman and a change of pace back later, spent this money on OL or any number of positions.
The money they are paying him says that they expect him to run for 1,000+ yards a year and be a feature back.
This guy is a big upgrade from Hyde in receiving ability but also a big downgrade in running ability so I'm pretty perplexed.
Minnesota's run game went to crap anytime they had to depend on this guy for more than a handful of carries.
Shanahan and Lynch use FA to allow them freedom during the draft to take the better player rather than be tied to fill a need.

Anybody know what Hyde's pass-catching numbers were?
From PFF:
Coming off his worst-graded season due to shoddy work in the pass game, both as a receiver and as a blocker, Hyde is a
one-dimensional back who has always graded above average as a runner. No running back gave up more than Hyde's 13
pressures in pass protection, and he also finished with the worst drop rate in the league at 13.2 percent. As a runner, Hyde
has had a productive four-year career, but he needs to be managed in the pass game in a platoon situation.

The Malcom Smiths and Jerick Mckinnon's of the world add up, too. For example, we guaranteed $11.5M to Malcom Smith. Let's say Jerick McKinnon gets $11.5M guaranteed (comparable to what Dion Lewis got). We could've easily found cheap alternatives in the draft, and then pooled that $23M in saved money to go after a guy like Allen Robinson. Allen Robinson only got around $25M guaranteed from the Bears!Originally posted by northvan49erman:
I know everyone is excited about the direction of this franchise. But people need to take a step back.
This is an awful contract for a player that should be making a third of what he signed for.
Add Earl Mitchell, Malcolm Smith, and Kyle Juszyzk to the mix and you've got a track record of overpaying for mediocre players/unimportant positions.
And I love everything Garoppolo, but time and again we're seeing franchises succeed when QBs are on their rookie contracts and they can use that cap space to build the rest of the team. 49ers could have gone that route, but opted to pay big at the QB position. Eagles and Rams are prime examples.
Pump the brakes.
Can anyone really say they'd rather have Malcom Smith + Jerick McKinnon than a guy like Allen Robinson? I love what this regime is doing but they haven't been perfect. Some of these signings have been frivolous.

And who said that's the plan? He's gonna play more than RB man...I keep on saying look at kamara and how they use him.
I don't care how he gets yards as long as he does.

Kyle had a similar back in 2008, Steve Slaton. 1200+ rushing and 50 receptions for 300+.

Wouldn't be surprised if a bigger back is brought in as well
That's how I'm looking at it.

Guy won't be the starter by years end guaranteed. Hopefully non of his contract is guaranteed and the whole thing is incentive based.

McKinnon's run at 1:20 of this video is a perfect microcosm of his running ability.
Has the speed to get to the next level quickly. Gets a DB squared up in a one-on-one situation. This should be a house call if he was elusive or creative. But he takes it back to the outside to try to beat him with speed and is met by the perimeter DB.
