Except we really wasn't saving anything by cutting him

This is cool. It'll be nice if he can come back and be good for us, but if not luckily Arby is one of our deepest positions talent wise.
We're still paying this dude to lay on a bed? Great

If Breida comes back for the minimum, then I am cool with keeping him, but if not, I want Breida+Coleman gone, and McKinnon back on a reduced salary. Mostert-McKinnon-Wilson is fine by me, along with us stashing a UDFA RB on our practice squad in case of injury, perhaps in 2021 we could look to draft a RB to push Mostert for carries, while also allowing McKinnon to leave.

You can't count on McKinnon for anything. He hasn't played in 2 years.

Exactly, he's coming off two years of rust and a surgically repaired knee so who knows what he can do....probably not much. Hopefully they'll get rid of him before the season if he doesn't prove a lot b/c he's been stealing 49er money for the last 2 years.

His original deal had an out after two seasons.

No. Would have been a $4.5M cap hit even with a release.

I see a $4 million dollar hit but that was by design compared to the nearly 20 million he made during the first two years. We'll have to wait on details to see if it was worth it but I bet we could have gotten Freeman here for less than it's going to cost to hope McKinnon stays healthy...especially with Freemans connection to KS.

Why do people keep saying stuff like this

they save MORE money by restructuring him. This is simply a pay cut. They can save around $6M in cap space by doing this (vs $4M by simply cutting him) AND they won't have any dead money in 2021. They see if he's got anything come training camp, if not cut him.
good move,I think next year our offense is going to explode and our d will drop off a bit. not be bad but still good enough to win a sb

He's not getting more money in this scenario.

The good news is McKinnon has had two full years to memorize the playbook.
