I'm getting really tired of reading everyone hyping him up saying "ohhhh Kyle had sooo many plays lined up for JM.....he had to scrap the whole playbook when he went down.....etc."
Did anyone ever sit down and think that maybe Kyle designed an offense with JM as a key factor simply because the rest of the offensive roster was utter trash? I mean seriously. Isnt it just as likely that Kyle built plays around JM because he was the best by comparison, rather than a dynamic player that he was dying to design his offense around? Especially considering Kyle never really built an offense around passing to a running back before? I mean lets really look at this for a minute.
QUARTERBACKS
CJ Beathard and Nick Mullens. Two young, completely unproven QBs to lead the team. What would be the best way to acclimate them into the NFL? A complex passing offense that threw the ball all over the field? Or one that had quick passes to short routes which include the running back position? That was rhetorical. Obviously unproven, not very highly touted QBs wouldnt be running complex offenses, so having a ton of plays getting the RB involved would help out the QBs dramatically.
WIDE RECEIVERS
Pierre Garcon: He had the worst year of his career the year prior, and was in the last year of his career. Useless.
Marquise Goodwin: Burner that has one specific skill set.
Kendrick Bourne: 2nd year player. Thought of as a #4/5 at best at this point.
Dante Pettis: Hopes were high but was a rookie. Couldnt really count on a rookie to build an offense around.
Trent Taylor/Richie James Jr: Both were fringe practice squad/NFL players at this point.
Basically, you didnt have a single reliable wide receiver on the team.
TIGHT END
George Kittle: Gonna preface this for all the people who are about to be offended by saying even as a rookie, I really liked Kittle. But this was year 2, before he had anything close to a breakout season yet. While the promise was there, at this point in his career, you couldnt build an offense around him.
OFFENSIVE LINE
Was projected to be a middle of the pack offensive line at the start of the season. And our big FA line signing was horrible.
So when you add all of this up, can you guys finally see why I think using the "Kyle built a ton of his playbook around McKinnon" isnt a very good way to prove anything? We had a trash roster, and there wasnt anyone else to build around. Couple that with the fact that our QBs were horrible, and the best way to help crappy QBs was to put them in the best position to succeed, and I dont see how anyone can draw any conclusions from Kyles comments about JM and the offense.
Hopefully he proves me wrong and is a stud for us. But he is coming off of 2 missed seasons. My expectation is zero.
