I know everyone is excited about the direction of this franchise. But people need to take a step back.

This is an awful contract for a player that should be making a third of what he signed for.

Add Earl Mitchell, Malcolm Smith, and Kyle Juszyzk to the mix and you've got a track record of overpaying for mediocre players/unimportant positions.

And I love everything Garoppolo, but time and again we're seeing franchises succeed when QBs are on their rookie contracts and they can use that cap space to build the rest of the team. 49ers could have gone that route, but opted to pay big at the QB position. Eagles and Rams are prime examples.

Pump the brakes.

Lol.

Lol he brings up earl Mitchell's contract what? His cap hit is like $3.8 million wow just awful.

What a joke...people actually think players don't get overpaid a little in FA? Less then 24 hrs ago everyone was whining about not signing anyone NOW everyone is whining that we did...I see why we get called the whiners

If people can't open their eyes and see what Mckinnon will actually be in this offense (not just a RB) then I don't know what to tell ya.

I don't give to flying f**k if he gets yards on the ground or in the air but he's gonna happen in this system.

I hate how some people just nitpick little things ... he mentioned Mitchell and other people ... why just focus on Mitchell?? Yeah that's 3-4 million u can save by drafting 6th/7th rounded to fill that hole and Roll over the $ instead of spending on redundant position !

Juice got paid what?? 5mil per year ? Because he was offensive weapon?? Lol.. he got 300 yards receiving !

I thought Shanahans specialty is finding rbs in draft... So many good rb's coming out this year .. sorry I just don't see reason to spend 30mil on someone that was 3rd on his teams depth chart!

Look at belichick how he builds his team, I don't see many overpaid players!
You should look at Juszcyzk's stats over the last 5 games before you poo poo his production.

Dude doesn't know what he's talking about, whatever lol...complaining about paying a player $7 million like that's a f**king ton of money when you have a cap of $178 million. Ryan grant gets the same deal and he's horrible lol. Yeah they're stupid because they paid a starting NT 4 million because they CLEARLY can get the same player in the 6th rd lol.

It will be funny to look back at these comments and people complaining about money that's not even theirs when McKinnon is throwing up 1,200+ scrimmage yards for us.

Agree, we don't even know the contract details yet, and when has Paraag written a bad cap contract? I don't remember any so far. The only ones that got us into cap hell was prior to his coming. Once he came on board, that cap hell stuff never really has came back, aside from when we got to the super bowl and lost. I also enjoy looking at comments back about 3 to 4 years removed. It really shows you who knows their stuff and who doesn't. The ones I respect usually are right, but aren't *proven* right for a couple of years. Sad to say.

He will catch a lot of balls but IMO he's a poor man's Dion Lewis. Hopefully Shanny can bring out the best in him.

I think you mean Dion Lewis is a poor mans McKinnon.

Excellent!

York and now Lynch give us plenty to complain out.

McKinnon is another injury case smh other then signing Jimmy G to an extension this has been a terrible off season. Alll that cap room and couldn't even get one elite player. Sad.

I hope you are joking...

x2

McKinnon is a glass RB he gets hurt all the time.

4 years 30 million for Jerrick McKinnon thats almost as bad as the deal Lynch gave Malcom Smith.

The 49ers paid more for McKinnon than the Titans did for super bowl champion Dion Lewis

I was reading PFR, and the comments there were more positive than here.

Anyhow, here's my concern with McKinnon. Look at his numbers compared to his backfield partners the last two years.

2017

2016

SPARQ is nice and all, but the sport is football, not combine. Nothing in these numbers or his career numbers, suggests an explosive player.

What this really makes you wonder is why is the Vikings offensive line this bad at run blocking??? When your RB's are that close in Y/A that's not just similar ability, that's consistency in the OL one way or the other. In that way, it's consistently not good. Case Keenum deserves more credit. Good grief. No wonder DEN picked him up.

Meh, what does it matter if you are able or not able to punch it in from the 1 yard line if you are ahead? Kick teh field goal, and just make sure you have a strong defense to shut down the opposing offense and move the ball between the 20's and absorb clock time and basically keep away until the clock runs out.

Geidi... I'm not poo pooing his production ..I like juice and obviously he is probowler ... obviously you can not just extrapolate from 5 games only too because it will skew his production. It's just that when you get paid nearly double next ranked FB in the league, that's setting us up for failure. You can't be paying 5mil to fb and 7mil to 3rd down fb and expect to build annual contender.
I like McKinnon, but Dion Lewis who was ranked BETTER in pass protection and receiving than mckinnon got 10 mil less than McKinnon. That is what rubs me the wrong way
How is having your FB and RB being mismatches for opposing LBs is setting us up for failure ?

Let me try this different way ... our fullback and third down back obviously won't play every single down ... yet they account for 7% of the 170 mill salary cap... that's 2 not every down players accounting so much of salary cap space .. you got the other 50 players to account for

So for those who are so giddy about our cap space ... sooner or later it will start running out

My mom's best friends with John Lynch's dads ex girlfriend from the 60's. She just told me they are having second thoughts after reading this thread.

Is this John Lynch??

I really think maybe some people on this forum get paid just to drink the coolade and applaud whatever we do

I remember most on this forum swore by baalke

Please example how SF has had a poor off season? They extended a couple players that helped this team (to team-friendly contracts) they gave jimmy G a big contract that actually gives the team a ton of flexibility down the road, the got Sherman for pennies compared to the rest of these FA CB, they signed the best center in FA, and now have a great pass-catching COP back that can play all over the field.

No kool-aid to be had...those are facts

I agree. Free agency is shaping up to be what NCommand predicted it to be weeks ago.

So far so good. The point of FA is to upgrade over current starters, add a skill set you don't have, and plug gaping holes.

ER Cassius Marsh - Younger version of Elvis Dumervil (upgrade)
QB Jimmy Garropolo - FQB (upgrade)
C Daniel Kilgore - Security (depth)
T Gary Gilliam - Better version of Beadles (upgrade/security)
WR Marquise Goodwin - How good is this deal looking now?
SAM Dekoda Watson & RB Raheem Mostert - Two ST aces
CB Richard Sherman - Potential massive upgrade over Donte Johnson (upgrade)
C Weston Richburg - Massive upgrade over Kilgore (upgrade)
RB Jerick McKinnon - Upgrade over Hyde in a ZBS (upgrade)

Yup, I think you posted the ShanaLynch free agent strategy in the Team Needs thread - *weeks* ago. Great Call, now I need to pay my bills, can you give me next months lotto numbers?

The cap increases every year, also we are not spending like other teams.

to say this off season moves will cripple us in later years is really overthinking the today's situation.

Keeping the offense on the field because of those two guys would be a steal

This we paid to high.

Considering what other free agent backs have gone for, and based on his production and stats thus far, yes, we overpaid.

Its almost like they can rank RBs independent of their OLs.
