What other positions of need still had the best prospect at the position available?

Terrible value pick? So the best tackle prospect is now less valuable than the second or third best pass rusher or corner prospect? Seems some people don't understand the value of an elite tackle prospect.

he is going to be a servicable RT, but never a difference maker like you expect from a top 10 pick... Brown ate too many pancakes and made Shanalynch panic and draft for need instead of holding steady and taking BPA, I hope I am wrong

Its almost like its possible to update your views based on new information.

When the team started having visits with a whole lot of tackles it became clear that they saw the position as a major concern along with edge rusher and CB. By the time we got into April it seemed clear that tackle wasn't just a position they were looking at, it was one of their main priorities.

I thought that Brown would show up motivated in a contract year, get into his best shape ever, instead all you saw from him was a guy putting on more and more weight not less. I like him a lot as far as his potential but he's done absolutely nothing to make himself better despite all the opportunities afforded to him.

So no McGlinchey wouldn't have been my first or second choice, I was all about Roquan and adding him to the defense but when the Bears took him ahead of the 49ers, what was I going to do, cry over it? They still got a very good player and a guy who should be a starter for a long time for this team.
Any linemen at all are a win in my book. Give jimmy g time and watch him shred defenses.

I'm okay with the pick I guess.

"In ShaLynch I trust"

Look at it this way, now we possibly have a starting OLine that contains high draft picks with (4) 1st round picks and a 2nd rounder. Hopefully it pans out.

Staley-Cooper-Richburgh-Garnett-McGlinchey

Backups:
Gilliam: Swing Tackle
Magnuson: C/G
Tomlinson: Both G positions

Brown: Trade

I wonder how we handle Trent Brown. Cut or trade?

Cutting a guy who can get a second or third round pick would be pretty stupid

All depends on how he has recovered and if he is in shape to play

Me too. If this guy starts our pass pro is literally worse. WTF? Maybe he can fix his pass pro issues, we drafted another OT with pass pro issues that never really panned out.

At least we can better run those stretch plays, jimmy gonna get killed but our new RB should be ok.

He pass blocks just fine. He was dominant when he played on the right side at Notre Dame. And as a bonus they won't be averaging like 2 yards a carry when they run to the right this season.

And let's be honest. It's not even a discussion if roquan was there. Saw value in a thin OT class. I think we will like it better after we see our picks in the next 2 rounds.

Don't mean to rain on your parade but this guy is neither slow footed nor mediocre... I agree that it is difficult to measure the value of a RT over time but this guy sounds like you can plug him in for the next 6-10 years and he be a very capable starter as well as a leader in the locker room. The team seems to value character, leadership, and intangibles at this point and apparently, this guy was off the charts in those areas.

In which case I don't blame them for wanting to move on from Brown.

There was an assumption that he would come back motivated, especially with the success that the team was having, show up in shape and be ready to go, proved he deserved elite tackle money. It sounds like dude just went back to his default mode of "IDGAF" which led to him being a 7th rounder in the first place. So much talent but if he's not going to push himself, then he might not have a long future in the NFL.

Everyone was complaining about our o-line, and then the Niners draft an lineman and then everyone complaining that we drafted a lineman. lolol

zone gonna zone

Agree! I wasn't fond of the idea of drafting an OG with the ninth pick but an OT who can start on the right side and then move left when Staley retires is well worth the pick. Nelson might have been as well. I wanted R Smith but...oh well!

I wasn't thrilled about the pick either, but look at it this way... Staley is old and can go down with an injury any time, Brown might not be as ready as we want him to be (injury plus fat as f**k still), then we're left with Gilliam. We'd definitely be in need of another swing tackle at that point...
