Odds are 49ers resign him.

If we let him go and sign someone else his equal, we lose a comp pick.

So either we're trying our best to do that or putting all our faith in someone already here or a rookie?

I just checked the list of Unrestricted Free Agents (no more acronyms ) per Spotrac against the PFF ratings. The only RT close to McGlinchey is Ty Nsekhe of the Rams, who is 37 years old.

There is enough money available to resign him. The only other option is to go with Colton McKivitz and he has only played 71 snaps all season. Jaylon Moore has played a few more snaps at "below average" rating. Kyle has rejected the idea of moving Burford out to OT. Brunskill is a possibility but we need him as our swing OL.

The other point that needs to be considered is that Trent Williams, as good as he is now, will be 35 next season. At some point we will need his replacement. With no picks in the first four rounds this season (2-3 comp picks at the end of round 3), the chances of replacing McGlinchey in the draft are not at all realistic.

So...resign MM. His PFF rating continues to improve. He is now inside the top 10 RTs around the league. He's good. Keep him.

I would be very concerned if the RT plan is McKivitz or Moore.

I am wondering if Burford is an option at RT. He played both G and T in college, and seems to have the body type to play T in the NFL. Then we can have Brunskill, Poe, Zakelj, Moore, McKivitz, or someone off of the street to compete at RG.

If the lack of RTs on the market drives up his price, that's the only reason to not re-sign McG. Meaning if he gets an offer that resets the RT market, then the 49er need to take that into consideration. I don't know if giving McG the biggest RT contract ever is the wise thing to do since Bosa needs a new deal, and the team needs to think about Aiyuk/Jennings. The QB room being cheap will help a lot.
That will be the issue: How high will scarcity drive the market?

The current top is Ramszyk @ $19.2M. Two others (Lane Johnson and Brian O'Neill) are also in the $18-19M range. McGlinchey is good but not as good as those guys. A realistic number for Mc would be in the $12-14M range, IMO. That would be up from his 5th-year option of $10.8M.

Yeah, the free agent market can do weird things. "Fair market value" goes out the window when the supply (free agent RTs) is low.

With so many good edge rushers around the league, everyone needs quality OTs at both ends of the line. With more guys like Bosa who switch ends, one can no longer just protect the blind side.

There are only five LTs that are UFA this year, and that includes 40-year-old Jason Peters, so realistically only four. Orlando Brown is the best. Spotrac estimates his market value at $22M/yr!!!

All of that supports what you said, "fair market value" goes out the window in a scarce market.

It's en vouge to clown on him so a lot of ppl do it. I've been saying all year he's pretty good and let's give him that chance coming off injury.
In researching the above, I came across the following data of comparable RTs in their contract year and what they signed for:

Player ----------------- Hurries/game ----sacks/game -------- new salary & year they signed.
Ryan Ramczyk ---------1.25 ------------- .06 ------------------$19.2M - 2021 - UFA 2027 -
Taylor Moton ---------- 1.09 ------------- .25 ------------------ $17M - 2021 - UFA 2026
Rod Havenstein ------ .94 -------------- .32 ------------------ $11,5M - 2022 - UFA 2026
Mike McGlinchey ---- .89 ------------- .37 ------------------ TBA

By these numbers, McGlinchey is slightly lower in hurries than his comp. With the exception of the great year RR have in 2020, Mc is very comparable to his other two peers in sack rate/game. Hence, we can expect negotiations to start at $12M and go up to about $18M.

Pile it up high, Your Funkness! Slather it in hot sauce!

Even in his best, healthiest and contract year (shocker), he still makes the mental mistakes of a rookie.

But credit where credit is due. Overall, he's been playing well.

Let's hope the non-clutch penalties, free rushers and 3rd down PP fails stop and he balls out through a Superbowl win!

He's unlikely to be here next year.

Yup, I think the bigger free agent signings will be Bosa and Aiyuk.

Looks like more 3rd round comps will be available with Ran Carthon getting a GM job. Demeco looks like he's gone. I heard somewhere (sorry no link) that Denver brought their whole hiring guys and flew them to 4949 Marie P. debartolo way to meet with Demeco. If that's true, then he's a lock for that HC job, again - if true. That's plenty of draft capital to add some depth to the right tackle spot.

Kyle's got his franchise QB, he better start protecting him if he wants Purdy to play till he's 45.

You've got it covered.
He's been very good latter half of the season.

He has been very good. I Was ready to move on lol. Guess it depends on the price tag, but they love him.
Massive test this Sunday. Demarcus Lawrence and Micah Parsons are beasts. I think both of them are bad matchups for McGlinchey being shorter, explosive players. McGlinchey is going to have to play one of the best games of his career.
He's been a completely different player. He went from terrible to very good over the course of the year. I still don't want to pay him more then 10ish per year
