He's a good character guy. That's for sure.

The OL needs attention and a long term plan.
That is the problem. McGlinchey is by far the best RT UFA this year. He will draw a lot of interest because no one close to him is UFA.
With our earliest pick this year being a 3d round comp pick, which is really a 4th round pick, there will not be any starter-quality OTs left.

Judging how he exited the game he ain't retiring yet.
He's only in year 2 of a massive deal. We have 3 more seasons.

I hope this guy is on another team, any where but here next year.

It is ironic that we want to dump McGlinchey at the same time we probably can't afford to resign him since he'll be too expensive.
My guess is a 3rd round pick plus Brunskill, McKivitz and Moore competing for the spot.

McG will get paid, by us or someone else. If we let him walk we will get a nice comp pick.

What is essentially an early 4th round pick is nowhere near reasonable compensation for losing a top-10 starting RT.
Given that we still have a playoff-caliber roster, can the 49ers can afford NOT to sign him?

We can. 2nd contract shouldn't go to guys who have major reservations. It's gonna be a expensive deal and he's had some major medical. I would say let's move on. Save the 2nd contract for real dudes. Still stunned we let DeFo walk.

We gave that pick to the Panthers for CMC. All we have are comp picks prior to the 5th round.
We need Brunskill as a swing guy. Moore backs up Trent. That leaves McKivitz as the only option at RT and he has had very few snaps this season - 88 last time I looked.

We didn't let Buckner walk, we traded him for the 13th pick, which we ultimately turned into Kinlaw (after trading back to 14 with Tampa, who took Tristan Wirfs).

What "major" reservation?
He was playing the best ball of his career post-recovery this season.

Think back to how we got Laken. Granted not a tackle, but you can find guys like this. It's not a choice between sign McG or have no RT.. lot of dudes out there in FA / draft. I fear the contract here would be an overpay unless he just plays every game which is prolly not realistic.

George Fant - 31 - 79
Billy Turner - 32 - 73
Ja'Waun James - 31 - did not play this year
Jawaan Taylor - 25 - 68
David Quessenberry - 33 - 67
Josh Wells - 32 - 48
Jermaine Eluemunor - 29 - 21 (only real comp to McGlinchey)
Marcus Cannon - 35 - spent the year on the couch
Ty Nsekhe - 37 - 34
Le'Raven Clark - 30 - did not play this year
Mike McGlinchey - 28 - 35 - if I counted correctly, McGlinchey is the #9 ranked RT.
Since nobody is going to trade us a starting RT, that leaves us with either McKivitz or a comp pick at the end of the 3rd round to replace Mc if we can't resign him.
See the problem?

Paying an average tackle lots of money is exactly the kind of decision that can set a franchise back - especially one which is a contender and doesn't have a lot of cap space to begin with.

James is a player if healthy so my type of approach would be get a much more cap friendly deal there, then draft someone mid round.
I think a sin of team building is giving the lucrative 2nd contract to a guy who most folks around here think is marginal at best. You don't want big money going to guys who are not elite guys. That's how you end up letting DeFo go for nothing. Just my 2 cents. If you have doubts about the guy, and I don't doubt his play so much, more his health issues, he's got a lot of wear and tear. Any doubts, don't give the fat deal, it's a mistake.
