Reminds me of paul richardson
Excited about:
  • How Kyle will put him in position to be successful
  • Excited to see him as the 3rd and 4th WR on the field
  • Speed and route running
  • Returns
  • Bright kid

Concerns:
  • Remember Kyle Williams and Quinton Patton outside? Beat. To. Hell.
  • Press is going to be a big struggle at the NFL level
  • Rashard Robinson-like frame; expect hamstring and various nagging injuries. Needs a year in the weight room.
  • Watching his tape, he played some horrendous DB's (wow, just wow)
  • Going to have to learn 3 positions within a complicated WCO route tree
  • We barely used Bolden Jr. last year so will we get the return in returns?

Overall: He's Kyle guy and I have little doubt he'll fit in nicely in the offense and he'll know how best to use him and will adjust. Solid pick. Poor value considering the trade up.

How so? Some highlights I've seen him jump high for the ball. We don't have guys that can do that, so I wonder if he's got bounce
Hit the weight room. Doesn't have to get bigger, just stronger. I love his route running and his return ability. We all thought ridley was the most obvious kyle wr, this guy is the next obvious one.

Good Post. The only thing I would disagree is he will struggle off the LOS, I think he's a technician with his releases. The thing I've learned is you don't have to be heavy in stature to win off the line, I've had young men 5'8 155 lbs who you couldn't touch off the line, and against a current NFL CB in practice every day.

Pettis is pretty good at tracking the ball, my other question would be contested catches, he's does a good job of working back to the ball but that's where is frame is more of a question IMO

Always a well thought out analysis man and I agree with most of it

I always question the "value" statement because it's a term that implies there's a standard definition for most teams in relation to players once you move out of the top 5 or 7.

Saying this pick is value is just blindly trusting best case scenario - just look at the picks themselves and how many skilled and productive players were available at each. We have a ton of holes, WR was actually less so than other positions, and we gave 2 premium picks that should land 2 high end starters for 1 player. A player that of all the hundreds of analysts (many of which have been scouts) out there, maybe only 2 had as a 2nd round pick. THAT is the problem I have with this pick. The draft is a gamble but you wanna maximize your premium picks to reduce that gamble.

Even beyond that, the trade up isn't saying he's a 2nd rd value, it's saying he's a 1st rd value. Why else would you give up a 2nd and a pick at the top of the 3rd? The only way we make that trade is if he was one of those "30 first rd players" that Lynch talked about and if we truly had a first rd grade on him I have serious doubts about our talent evaluation. Who knows maybe 1,000s of other people that analyze the draft are wrong and he ends up showing to be a 1st round caliber player. I highly doubt that and think his success will be due to the system - why don't you take advantage of the fact that he doesn't have that same value in other systems and steal these types of players. To me this would be like us taking Trent Taylor (who I loved) in the 2nd rd because he will produce in our system.

But I remember vaguely that John Taylor played under 200lbs, so I looked him up— JT is 6'1, played at 185lbs, yet he was one of the strongest WR on the team. Different era of football but there's no way you can tell me Pettis can't play WR inside or out at 186lbs when JT played in an era where WR were being mauled all through their route progression

marvin harrison was 6 foot and 180 lbs as well...speed, route running equals separation. Throw in is top end vision and a accurate qb like JG. We will see some things happen.

Look at this speed:

Goodwin 4.27
Pettis 4.39
McKinnon 4.41
garcon 4.48

I like the Pettis pick but how do you know his 40 speed when he didn't run one at the combine or his pro day.

Looking like 300yds, 3TDs, 2FG by halftime

Shanaroppolo is gonna make teams look silly

Yeah, Kyle talked about him being great in bump and run but I couldn't find one single route where he was truly squared up and contested with coming off the LOS. In fact, he was "clean" on every route which plays into his best skill sets (quickness, ability to sell his routes, crisp routes, sneaky speed, etc.). So for now, it's just a concern. No doubt Sherman and Witherspoon will test the hell out of him at the LOS and that can only make him better going forward. We'll play against a ton of really good press CB's next year. But Kyle can move him off the LOS to give him more space to work with too. Great point about coming back for contested catches too. He'll have to learn how to box out more, timing, etc.

Thanks. Agreed, the "value" discussion is always a good one. Mike McGlinchey is a good example. Most had him in the late first and mid-second but b/c he plays a premier position, and one where the talent pool is poor to begin with, you can see why MM would go 9 to us or 10 to the Raiders. That changes the value board.

But with this one, Dante is going to be a 3rd or 4th WR who adds in ST value as a returner and we gave up a high pick to do it (gave up another starter). That value doesn't add up today esp. when you consider the other players on the board at WR...but it might down the road. This was a player Kyle probably had a first round grade on.

Stay tuned on this one...his true value will be determined later where with MM, that value esp. with the Brown trade seems to add up much more evenly.
