Outside of Jimmy G, very well may be true. He is definitely the wildcard that could dramatically impact the season.

Naww it's Mike McGlinchey who will be a rookie starter taking over for arguably the best pass protecting RT in the NFL. If this McGlinchey fellow can't protect Jimmy G like his life is on the line, then the 49ers are done regardless. Mr McGlinchey will definitely be under a microscope from the very beginning.

Lets take this to the extreme and see how much you believe what your stating...

If 2 teams out of 32 are willing to draft a guy in the top 10, and everyone else has them off their board entirely, would it by "definition" not be a reach?

If you knew 100% that to be the case. But without knowing 100% other than those 2 teams liked the player there I would say it's not.

You loved Derwin and probably think he's a steal at 17. What if all 32 teams had him as their 17th player? Is he still a steal? Without all the info it's a dumb label to use.

My point is, that i think your premise is flawed a bit with this particular argument.

To answer your Derwin comment, any team that drafted him after #1 overall got a steal! (On a side note, it sounds like he would have been our pick if Brown would have come into camp in shape.)

This guy will start the season on the PUP list with an ankle injury, book it.

Anybody know what this guys 40 time is??

Correction he didn't run the 40 at his pro day due to a lingering ankle issue from back in November. One thing you must give Pettis credit for is his smarts. He knew if he had ran a 4.6 plus 40 he most likely slides to day three. Instead the 49ers wasted 2 picks on him, if he doesn't start over Garcon sooner rather than later it will be terrible value. You basically have 2 of the same player, destroying the value the 49ers managed to find last year in Taylor. And again giving up 2 picks/players to do so it makes no sense.

Without complete information making any judgement on the actual value of a pick is a flawed premise.

Fact: Trent Brown never pass blocked for Jimmy G. McGlinchey needs to be better than Gilmore and Beadles were for Jimmy G, because that is who Jimmy G had blocking for him. If those guys didn't get Jimmy G killed, I don't see McGlinchey getting him killed. A quick release is a hell of a blocking line.

Brown started against the Bears.

I cant wait to get this guy on the field. Will be our true returner since ted ginn and will be even better~

Can lineup outside and in the slot. Runs fantastic routes.

Whats not to love?

He was expected to go 20 picks later therefore he sucks and is awful value. According to some...

He was projected to be drafted 3rd to 4th round, that's potentially 80+ picks later. It's god awful value, even IF some other team had reached for him the 49ers definitely could've filled 2 holes at 59 and 74. Instead they reached for Kyles obvious draft crush, and then tried to pretend like the team still doesn't have significant needs.

By now, you should know that's ShanaLynch's MO. They have a few guys they really really want (last year it was Beathard, Taylor, Thomas, Witherspoon, Joe Williams). they target those guys and don't worry about the "value" in picking them. The remaining picks are just "competition" and giving guys a shot to make the league.

I stand corrected. I forgot he missed a week, came back with the injury, then went on IR. General point still stands - Jimmy G played all his 2017 snaps without a *healthy* Brown and lived to tell the tale.

My initial reaction to the trade up for a WR was that it was a luxury pick. The WR group is in good hands with Garcon/Goodwin/Taylor imo. But that's just for 2018. Hopeful that Garcon ages gracefully, but the WR group can't be left without a good flanker. It's obvious Kyle wanted this guy badly. When it comes to "reach", it's impossible to tell unless notes are shared between the GMs.
I love how people are whining about this, saying we shouldn't have traded up for WR, but everyone was so heart broken when we passed on signing a WR like Robinson in FA. You can't please people nowadays, ridiculous.
His versatility is a major plus. If any of the starters are injured (Garcon/Goodwin/Taylor) he can step in for each of them to a certain degree. Garcon is coming off a spine/neck injury, after all.

After these last few press conferences I question "ShanaLynch's MO". There was a few times Lynch was asked an easy question and instead of directly answering he would start babeling off on some weird tangent. Kyle saved him on one. Its been mentioned already by non subjective posters that Lynch and Shanahan were contradicting themselves. In one breath they said "we don't want to just add players that arent good enough to make the team" ok fair enough then why draft 3 DB's and 2 interior DL's?? Then the tune changes to "we believe in competition" Lynch also said the way the 49ers grade players doesn't involve grading them by round, then when referring to the Streets pick he said they had a 3rd round grade on him. I'm starting to think Lynch is a b******tter.

I actually like this pick a lot and I'm not sure why people have a problem with it. At first I'll admit, it didn't fit "MY NARRATIVE". But the more I thought about it the more I realized how good of a pick it really was.

Let's start with special teams and his impact there. The best punt returner in NCAA history with 9 td's returned. Also a 12.7 yard avg to boot. Say what you want but 13 yards on a punt is pro-bowl material. Infact 12.7 would have ranked 2nd in the NFL last year in punt return avg.

As a receiver he is pretty polished for a rookie and I can see why Shanahan had to have him and insisted on trading up for him. He runs crisp clean routes and shows the hands to make effortless catches while showing the ability to high point the ball in traffic. His only knock is his strength but since he is getting paid to workout now, I don't see why he can't add bulk and strength to go together with his already polished skillset.

Everyone raved about Taylor Gabriel when Kyle was the OC in Atl. Think of Pettis as a Muhammad Sanu and Gabriel clone.

He can lineup at every position wide and help disguise pre-snap alignments with his versatility.

Quality player who will contribute day one in multiple phases of the game.

Grade A

Edit: When there is a guy available that you think makes your team better you go get him and you don't hesitate. You especially don't care what the fans think!
