Signing a true #1 receiver and trading up to reach on a on WR are two completely different stories

I think everyone would have been pleased if the 49ers had landed Allen Pretty easy to understand the frustration of trading up to reach on a WR

I don't see Pettis at 44 as a reach, but that's me. He's very talented. Plus Robinsion coming off an ACL injury, I would have been ok signing him, but not for the GTD money he wanted/got, rather develop a young WR then pay a guy that kind of money, just my opinion.

I cant wait to get this guy on the field. Will be our true returner since ted ginn and will be even better~

Can lineup outside and in the slot. Runs fantastic routes.

Whats not to love?

He was expected to go 20 picks later therefore he sucks and is awful value. According to some...

He was projected to be drafted 3rd to 4th round, that's potentially 80+ picks later. It's god awful value, even IF some other team had reached for him the 49ers definitely could've filled 2 holes at 59 and 74. Instead they reached for Kyles obvious draft crush, and then tried to pretend like the team still doesn't have significant needs.

Projected by who? I would bet the other 32 teams had different boards and had Pettis higher than Mel Kiper than Daniel Jeremiah and all the analyst you watch

By now, you should know that's ShanaLynch's MO. They have a few guys they really really want (last year it was Beathard, Taylor, Thomas, Witherspoon, Joe Williams). they target those guys and don't worry about the "value" in picking them. The remaining picks are just "competition" and giving guys a shot to make the league.

After these last few press conferences I question "ShanaLynch's MO". There was a few times Lynch was asked an easy question and instead of directly answering he would start babeling off on some weird tangent. Kyle saved him on one. Its been mentioned already by non subjective posters that Lynch and Shanahan were contradicting themselves. In one breath they said "we don't want to just add players that arent good enough to make the team" ok fair enough then why draft 3 DB's and 2 interior DL's?? Then the tune changes to "we believe in competition" Lynch also said the way the 49ers grade players doesn't involve grading them by round, then when referring to the Streets pick he said they had a 3rd round grade on him. Even after he blew his ACL weeks ago I'm starting to think Lynch is a b******tter.

Frank Gore blew out BOTH Acls in college and still had a 3rd rd grade on him. He also played FB as a senior and backed up Willis Mcgahee.

Gore also suffered from a severe form of dyslexia and struggled mightily with reading and writing, relegating him to an education curriculum that would earn him only a special education diploma.

How did that turn out? How about we take the wait and see approach?

Pettis reminds me a lot of Andre Reed of back in the day Buffalo.

Fair comparison, I have to agree if he gets a little stronger. Nice player comp.

And the whining of not taking Landry in the first when he didnt even get taken until the 2nd, woulda been a huge reach
"Where people make mistakes is when they say, 'We need a big, tall, red-zone target like Julio,' and then you go pay everyone else in the world who I can promise you isn't Julio. Now you can't go get a tight end, you can't go get a guard. Yeah, you've got that big guy, but it's got to be the right guy … You don't go, 'Hey, we need a big guy.' No, we need good receivers. They come in all shapes and sizes."

-Kyle Shanahan
If he is as good as KS thinks he is then it's a good pick. I just can't see why we traded up for him. Hopefully this doesn't turn out like his crush from last year who never seen the field.

One thing I know for sure is this guy's highlights are fun as hell to watch. If he can find away to transfer his elusiveness to after he catches the ball he will be one of the most exciting players to watch in the league. That's a big if though.

But muh draft board?

Stuff like this is so funny. This is why fans need to stop with the "we didn't need to select him that high!" nonsense. First it started with McGlinchey and soon after we see that Oakland clearly wanted him at #10. Now we also see that Pettis had no chance in hell of falling to #59.

I too think it is funny how so many people can say with such certainty that Pettis would have been there at 59 when 6 WRs were drafted in the 2nd round.

It does highlight the difference in draft strategy between Baalke and Shanahan/Lynch. If Baalke had 6 WRs with equal grades, he probably would trade back and take the one that was left while acquiring more draft capital. Kyle, would rather trade up and take the best fit for his scheme. We will see which one is a better draft philosophy soon enough.

Exactly right, Lynch doesn't get the draft value.
There are two basic parts #1. Talent Evaluation, #2. Pick Value / pick projection
If you know that a player isn't likely to be picked until rd 5 you don't take him in rd 2 even if he's your favorite player. The NFL is too competitive to be constantly throwing away pick value by over-drafting players that you fall in love with, rather than waiting until the appropriate time to select a player
