I'd guess he'd go as part of a package for somebody else...not a straight up swap for a pick. With two WRs on IR who may not come back... I don't know why they'd intentionally subtract the snap count leader if they think they'll make a deep playoff run.

This. Unless they get an immediate impact player at receiver back, it's dumb to trade such a young receiver away when the NFL is littered with a whole collection of receivers that looked lousy early on in their careers only to get it going and become highly dependable players.
I've used the Davante Adams example before since at the same point in his second season, most Packers fans just assumed he was a bust and were ready to move on and he was struggling while playing in an offense with Aaron Rodgers. Now he's seen as one of the better WRs in football.
Pettis's value isn't going to suddenly get significantly lower if they keep him and the team isn't exactly deep at WR to where keeping him becomes a burden. He's also had some really good games like vs Seattle last year so they may as well see if he can put it together.

Also factor in the relative health of the other receivers - Goodwin is a ? and Deebo is dealing with his groin injury - that would leave Sanders, Bourne and James as the only fully healthy WRs (and some would argue Sanders isn't with that minor knee issue).

Not a WR, but look at Witherspoon. Spoon flashed as a rookie (imo) then didn't look good in his second season. There were questions about his commitment to football. He's rebounded in his third season to play better.

This is well said and exactly how I feel.
It's not even opinion, it's fact.
Disagree, he's had 1 mental mistake this season, he's looked good the other plays. The 2 targets weren't his fault on Sunday in WASH, he was under thrown, and Jimmy made a bad read that led to a INT by Troy Apke, a good play by the DB. I don't get why people think he was or is in Kyle's doghouse, he had a hamstring injury week 1, that's why he didn't play much.
Bro, he has 83 yards on 9 catches despite having the most WR snaps (231). I want to believe in him too but after 1.5 years 'Kyle' might be done trying to turn him into something he may not want to be (or just, isn't; or never was). I have zero issues keeping him but if he's just going to be losing snaps, how can one expect him to get better. Like with Foster, when they know, they know and like so many others, they move on quickly and make good.
Is his career path closer to Solomon Thomas or Arik Armstead?
This team isn't in developmental mode anymore. They're ready now.
PS: Witherspoon is a poor example. Pettis is a player Kyle is working with every single day and was on him 24/7 even in the off season, even during breaks. If anyone knows if he's got it, it's Kyle. Witherspoon was a player the GM/HC had lots of concerns about quality coaching and made a change and now all our secondary players have improved. The FO also did nothing to replace Witherspoon. Kyle drafted Hurd and Deebo, two plays polar opposite of Pettis and then brought in Sanders, a veteran version of Pettis.

Good teams hoping for sustained success are always in developmental mode. I don't know why Spoon is a bad example - flashing rookies that didn't look good as sophomores with questions about commitment.

Hes a bad example because it doesn't fit the narrative NC is trying to push.

Did you read it...or are you just spouting your blind loyalty narrative again?

It's very possible...mysterious knee injury immediately after the trade for the player likely to take his snaps and right before the trade deadline. Goodwin is possible too. Thomas. Mullens. BeatHard. When it comes to trade (week), follow the mysterious injuries.
But who knows if the guy has a real source or not. On his motive for that quote.
My guess is still 75% Pettis stays home though.

God forbid someone have any patience when it comes to player development.
Better to be a fan who roots for players, than one who constantly tears them down. People like you would've wanted to run Montana out of the league because of his first year stats. You be your pessimistic self and I'll be my optimistic self.

It's a good balance. But I have no personal narrative here other than following the evidence to this point in time and not dismissing the possibility of where this could go (not being willing to accept that is the 'blind' part)...not just giving him the "give him more time" narrative simply because he's ours.
