Yup, he would've been there in the 20th round

Lol. Would have reached on Foster. Haha. He's probably a better player than anyone in the top 10Originally posted by MK_Ultra:Yes. Exactly. It seems that they don't understand 'value' very well.
Instead they fall in love with their favorites and MUST 'reach' for them regardless of value.
For example last year:
Solomon: "Must have" at #3 overall (so far not good = a reach)
Reuben Foster: Would have reached! ShanaLynch both said they would have taken Foster at #3 overall if Solomon wasn't there = clearly bad value would have reached at #3 overall
CJ Beathard: REACH Shanahan fell in love and traded up into rd 3 = clearly a reach projected to go rd 6
Joe Williams: REACH "must have" so traded up for what so far is a bust and likely didn't need to trade up
... then after they have reached for their favorites in the early rounds they do better getting good value in the later rounds because they are good talent scouts
2018:
Rd 2 Pettis: Reach
Rd 4 Street: Reach
Rd 6 Harris: Reach
I like all of these players, just these 3 were picked a round sooner than they had to. It's a minor issue but in the long run it's better to get good value. I think they are great talent evaluators so that is most important and I think they will be greatly improved because they do get good players; they just overpay for them. Baalke OTOH traded around for value but didn't get good players! I like the players they picked, it's just they REACH for some of them sooner than they had to.

Should have taken Sweat in the 4th and Street in the 5th
They don't seem to understand draft value ... instead they fall in love with their guys ahead of the draft and decide before the draft that "we want Pettis in the 2nd, and Street in the 4th" ... just like Baalke deciding he wanted AJ Jenkins at #30 the week before the draft. The right way to draft is to rank your players and see who falls to you. They should have waited in Street until the 5th since it's 95% chance he would still have been there
So you understand draft value and where players will be picked better than the professionals?

English on the serious note... Can you please expand the ignore list pretty please? I'm maxed out and just want to have the freedom of ignoring further posters who take away my love from the webzone. Hope that's a reply of truth you can understand.

I just don't think they care about value when it comes to going after the player they want. Yeah, I agree, I was hoping they'd take Sweat too, but that wasn't their guy. That said, value means nothing if you miss out on the guy you're targeting. For example, McGlinchey would have been taken by the Raiders at 10 had they not reached for him at 9. No value there, he's a reach at 9, 10 or 15, but there is no way he falls to their next pick. You either bite the bullet and reach for your guy or lose him entirely. What's the value in that? Value only means something if you want ESPN to give you a good draft grade, it doesn't win you championships, players do. You know, you maybe too young, but I recall Bill Walsh reaching on a player in the 1st round in 1985, he was from a small school and only had a third round grade, Walsh even traded up to nab him, because even though the player was valued as a third rounder, Walsh knew he'd be gone if he just waited. Who was he? Take a guess. Google it if you must, but know this, sometimes value is over valued!

This concept of maximizing value is ridiculous, you only draft for numbers and value if you have no idea what your doing. That maximizes your probability of success.
If you know what your doing and understand how players fit into your system... you draft the players you want and you garauntee you get them at all cost. You don't worry about maximizing value because yiur smarter than that.
If more people understood game theory I think they would drop this silly idealistic notion.

Jerry Rice was going to be taken by Dallas had they not traded up to get him. I remember people complaining about his "bad hands" at first. Truth is we just don't know yet about some players being called a reach. Beathard may yet be a cheap and decent #2 QB and everyone needs one. Joe Williams is a player I like and we know little about him so far although just seeing him run in college made me a believer. He put up 333 yards and four touchdowns against UCLA in his second game back and finished his career with 222 yards and a touchdown in the team's Foster Farms Bowl win over Indiana. He is very hard to tackle so let's just be patient until we know more.

Helped on special teams maybe. He would never see the field otherwise.

Value is relative. One pick is worth next to nothing to one guy, but worth a ton to another. It's why you often see a small handful of players shockingly fall or rise to spots you wouldn't expect each year. People fail to factor scheme fit and advanced/detailed player characteristics and look only at the general perceived value of players. That is a short-sighted and incomplete way to look at things.
MD and I beat the analysts virtually every year because a lot of the analysts do the same thing to an extent. If you can analyze and assess fits and needs of the entire league though, you have a much better chance of calculating players' slot values.
