makes sense

Waste of a pick - we could have signed him as an UDFA.

Don't you know that the webzone has more NFL contacts than Peter King?

It's easy to have knee-jerk reactions right after the draft, but after some time, you learn you have to give time to process and think through the picks before getting too upset. Many of us -- myself included -- have PTSD from the failed Baalke ACL picks and hated this pick because of it. I still hate the idea of taking a player coming off a torn ACL, but if you're going to take a guy, it better be someone who will be good when/if they recover. We'll see with Street. To Lynch's credit, Street has better tape for me than any of the ACL players Baalke took outside of Keith Reaser who I thought had a chance to develop as a nickel corner.

Tank was NEVER a player I was high on. Not before injury, not after. I hated the pick from the get-go because on top of having enormous flaws in his game, he was not a fit for our defense at the time either. As expected, he never became the pass rusher he was touted to be in the NFL. Lattimore had a slim shot of ever playing again. Smelter wasn't even worth his draft slot they took him in if he was healthy in my opinion. Baalke picked 7 players coming off ACL tears and none of them are with the team still.

I think if you look around the league, the success rate of players coming out as "redshirt" players with ACL injuries and having success later is not good. Very few recover to make an impact in the NFL.

IF and I know it's a big if with him coming of a torn ACL but if this kid can get healthy he will be a real solid player for us. I think he could be an outstanding, versatile back-up who can also turn into a solid starter.
ACL Success Rates

Interesting article on success rates for ACL recovery. One bullet point says NFL players have a 63% likelihood of return
AP returned in 9 months and ran for 2000 yards the next season after his ACL tear.

Jerry Rice came back same season. So what, nobody else has done what either has since nor is it likely.

Didnt Jerry get hurt again that game he came back?

Yes, but a different injury. He landed on the kneecap of the same knee that was repaired, while scoring a TD, and broke it. Likely related, but not directly.

Frank gore had two ACL injuries in college and SF drafted him in the 3rd rd.

That said players in high school and college (much younger, quicker healing), but not in the NFL. Even so, the number below are the most telling:

More concerning was the fact that the players' ability to play at the same level of ability was even less impressive: 50% of players at "nonskill positions" (e.g. linemen) were able to play at the same level, as opposed to only 41% of "skill position" players (defensive backs, running backs, etc).

So.. yeah, it's roughly 60-65% odds that he can come back at all, and 50-50 odds for a DL like him to come back and play at the same level.
