Did he wind up and throw him down? NO

Did Street bear hug him and continue on his already downward trajectory? YES

Did he dip his L shoulder on the way down so he wouldn't put all 295 lbs on top of Brees when they hit the ground together? YES

The defense rests.

This was a bullschidt call all the way....but it was in the New Orleans dome and Street deserves a pat on the back for not squishing Brees like a cardboard box with a refrigerator falling on it. B.S. and if Goodell had even 1 nut and 1 ounce of guts he would rescind this obvious fantastic tackle that was made without trying to injure the QB. B.S. B.S Unfortunately, Goodell doesn't have the guts to do the right thing here. What a gutless sissy. This is his job...to make sure somebody or some team doesn't get screwed. Ok the team got screwed . But after review the least gutless Roger could do was to correct the wrong in the call and penalty on Street.

Failing that, either Jed, Saleh, JL, Kyle ...or all the above should cover the fine. It is just blatantly an error...or bad mistake. C'mon Rog, do the right thing for a change.

Sucks... don't like to see guys get hurt... but I have a hard time feeling bad for a guy that seems to be able to call his own fouls like it's a backyard basketball pickup game.
Stinks, because it wipes out a great play from a guy who has worked his butt off to get healthy and be a contributor.

Not a lot Street could do there to make it easier on Brees. Street tackles him while falling to the side of him - not directly on top of him. Could he have more gently "laid" Brees on the ground? I don't see how considering Street is coming full bore and he wants to make sure Brees goes down. Maybe he could just bear hug Brees and keep holding him up until the whistle blows? That sounds ridiculous - this is football.

Two things that worry me going forward: 1) On a sack such as Street's here, the tackler is going to try so hard to not hurt the QB that the tackler is actually going to end up getting badly injured himself; 2) In making the effort to "lay a QB down easy" on a sack, a strong slippery QB like Wilson is going to break out of the sack and scramble for a key 1st Down that turns the game.

As a football fan, I don't ever want to see either of the above scenarios happen but with rulings such as on Street's sack, we're going down that path.

If NFL wants to call this a foul to protect the QB then whenever a defender gets an arm around a QB it should immediately end the play in a sack.

We will see how quickly QB change their tune.

It could be coming to this one day, which would suck but if that's what it takes to keep QBs safe while also allowing defenders to get due credit for sacks without picking up penalties.

They used to do that. For a few years they called the 'in the grasp' rule and blew the whistle. I don't know if they just quit calling it or got rid of the rule. Even with all the new rules QBs and other players continue to get hurt. I like the way they review those calls in college and decide whether they were actually targeting fouls. They should do the same on calls like that.

Yeah, the whole "in the grasp" rule seemed to get phased out. I remember it being controversial, where a QB escapes but the whistle blew because he was in the grasp and the play is dead. You can't win it seems like. QBs are still football players and will/can get tackled when attempting to pass. A concern I'd have if the NFL reviewed these sacks to see if they should be a foul or not is slowing down the game even more. Maybe it wouldn't be that bad, though, and maybe it could be a long-term solution.

Someone put Brees face on Loki

It was more about the look of the hit and the way Brees looked when he got up. It was a BS call but because the QB was shook up after, that got the flag. Its similar to the Brooks call about 9 years ago when he sacked Brees to end the game but was called a penalty because it looked bad, not because there was any rules broken. After every sack Brees looks for a flag.

It was a bad call. Brees apparently broke some ribs on the other side against Tampa that they didn't know about after x rays (something about swelling). I guess Street broke the other side and caused a lung puncture. He may have killed him if he landed on him. They should review helmet to helmet, and roughing the passer. Too many bad calls, and making defense way too hard. No wonder a QBs can play into their 40's with so much safety. Montana got destroyed a many times in his career.

Clean hit.
If Winston turns a couple of games over in the next month even though it's against scrub teams like the Falcons, Broncos, Falcons and Eagles which is possible Brady might want to send this guy a paycheck.
Lmfao we always get these BS roughing the passer penalties on brees. Like that one on Ahmad brooks awhile back.
