Coach Kyle Shanahan said that Richie James "has a chance to excel in that slot role."
James' primary role in 2018 was as a special teamer and that will likely continue to be his role moving forward, but Shanahan seems to be slightly more optimistic. As a rookie last year, James caught 9-of-14 targets for 130 yards with one touchdown, but he may earn a few more looks if he can close the gap with Dante Pettis, Marquise Goodwin, and Trent Taylor during the preseason.

He might make a big jump this year

I still wonder why, with Taylor's bad back and a lost season, why we didn't use him more after some early success.

He was inconsistent and dropped some easy passes. He might have more upside than Taylor but I think Taylor is better.

Assuming (hoping) Taylor comes back to form (which would be really helpful obviously as he was a slot machine his rookie year) the interesting question might become does James have more upside than Bourne. I think he does. But the team might prefer to keep another bigger body receiver in Bourne, which i'd understand... I think he'd have to legit beat out James though. In other words I don't think Kyle will keep Bourne over James just cause he's bigger. Lol. Which some posters here would

THE GUY IS JUST FEISTY !!!
you can tell the nose for the END ZONE..
We've given non deserving players chances after chances and even gave them more money, this guy (JAMES) can be something special for us..
Bourne should be the odd man out.. he can't play the slot.

Richie James uses that speed as an ace on special teams. He was one of only five players last year to return a kickoff for a touchdown and came in at 11th in kick return grade with a mark of 68.0. pic.twitter.com/3Syy4pMpup
