Reid, along with a half dozen other veteran safeties, is too slow to play the pass and too expensive for an in-the-box run defender.

and he has head issues and he hurt bowman

I think you have a point Dj, but Reid can play FS in a 2 deep scheme as well as SS in any scheme.

I don't think he is playing FS for any team in the current NFL. His best role by far is as in the box safety and based on the depth of the draft the past two years and FA, those guys are a dime a dozen right now. You can find guys that are reasonably passable for dirt cheap. Not nearly as good as Reid but close enough to make them a good value.

5 years ago there would be no way that Reid, Boston and Vaccaro would all still be on the open market in June but this is the current NFL and safeties that can thump but have limited coverage skills have become far less valuable.
Hey were back to football talk!

Agree.

...but he is too limited to keep for just that alignment.

Too bad. I like Reid. He is a sincere man of great faith and concern for others. I hope he gets a job.

As it's been said money could be the issue.

Agree with the bottom part, not the top.

There aren't that many people who can play single high Safety effectively, there are plenty of teams who play a mixture of Cover 2, quarters, Cover 2 Man or Tampa 2.

Reid could play either safety in all of the above which makes him more valuable than Boston, Vaccaro or other cheap run stuffing options.

There is only one reason he doesn't have a job.

How is there anything left to talk about with Reid?

Boston had 5 INTs last season, graded out the same as Reid by PFF.

If you think he is just a "run stuffing" option then that is just your bias showing. He is just as good in coverage as Reid, which isn't great by any stretch of the imagination.

Reid, Boston and Vaccaro are all pretty similar safeties. All best suited to play in the box.

I was putting Reid above Vaccaro and Boston, but all above "other run stuffing options".

To be honest I've not seen much of Boston, the Chargers under Bradley play a similar D to us and I know he isn't suited to the single high role.

Not sure what he brings to a team playing a mixture of 2 deep or Quarters but I know Reid can do it.

There is more than one reason he doesn't have a job but let me respond to that "one reason."

In a way, I feel sorry for Reid. He is a great teammate and a leader in the locker room. He is just that kind of guy. The problem is that he allied himself with Kaepernick after CK had come out with some of his vacuous comments and other off-field things became public. In so doing, he became attached to all those very ill-considered events and statements even though his own statements and activities were much more well-thought out than were Kaepernick's.

In short, though Kaepernick was really the toxic one in terms of media presence, Reid became guilty by association. IMO, had Reid been on another team and done the same thing he did on the 49ers, no one would have thought twice about any "baggage" he might bring. A lot of players knelt during the anthem but none of them aroused the ire the way Kaepernick did. So, Reid winds up in the same shade as Kaepernick, though he does not deserve it.

I still stand by the fact the primary reason he doesn't have a job is because of the position he plays, but I will not say that is the only reason.
^ 100% agree with this post..

Would also like to point out that him turning down a contract offer is another reason for his unemployment.

D.J. you are someone I respect on this board, but come on, you write that someone is guilty by association and also say that "in a way" you feel sorry for them, that just isn't right.

It's an injustice on top of an injustice. Bad things happen when good people look the other way.

And he is different from Reid in that regard how?

The bottom line is that teams are moving more towards safeties with better overall coverage skills, regardless of which safety spot they happen to play.

It also doesn't help that these past two drafts have been loaded at safety as well. If I am going to bring in someone that isn't an elite safety....IE...a single high safety, I might as well snag a rookie at 1/5th the cost and roll with them.

That I think has far more to do with why Reid and these other guys are still unemployed. Talented players with a skillset that is outdated and overpriced.
