Earl Thomas FS

Thomas -- regardless of price -- made way too much sense for the Niners. This isn't doom and gloom. We will be ok. But this really hurts. I'm not a Lynch hater -- but I think he really whiffed here. This was a layup.

You can say Lynch whiffed but we don't know if Thomas really wanted to come here. Maybe it was a little more than the Niners were willing to pay or maybe Thomas didn't want to be a mentor to the younger players. We just don't know. The positive side is the younger guys get to play more this way and have the opportunity to step up. Not saying they will but the second and third years are often the breakout years for guys where the light comes on and they finally get it. Let's face it, there is talent in the backfield but they just make too many mistakes. Hopefully that changes this year.
I am sure we will see reports soon that we "made a late push" and "went hard" for Thomas...

Thomas made it abundantly clear that he is a mercenary. Only cared about upfront money. This is a deal that should have been done.
I wanted Thomas but after seeing the contract he got...no thanks

It wasn't a money issue, per se. We still have plenty of money. It was a matter of value.

The Ravens were desperate for a safety having lost Weddle...and they have plenty of cash.

Also, Nasir Adderley will likely be sitting at #36 if Shanahan/Lynch want to go that way. He will be far less expensive and younger.

Thomas would have been nice but not at the price the Ravens paid.

We need to make a couple more signings or trades. I seriously don't get why we didn't make a bigger push for Thomas. We cannot go into the draft with huge holes at FS, Corner, and WR.

With our second pick, WR will most likely be BPA so absolutely have to fill out the roster so we can take a WR at #36.
Bummed we didnt land Thomas but tell me this deal doesnt look like he is basically positioning himself to angle for another payday in year 3.
.
Ravens out smarting everyone again.

I'm not sure we did. There were reports that Thomas and the Niners were not even talking. Maybe they just felt he was too expensive for an aging safety coming of an injury. Whatever, time to move on.
Can't win them all.

Ain't nothing wrong with that. Revis did that perfectly. It's a great contract for Earl.

Agreed, especially considering his age & recent + past injuries.

I'm of the mind that this contract was designed to be his retirement deal.
Even if he can stay healthy enough to merit a deal beyond this, I doubt
it will be a big payday.
