Might be a closer comp to compare SF to BUF, who also hired a new GM in 2017 along with a new HC. Both teams had their HC hand pick their GM. New GM and new HC is truly a rebuild.

That's a good one too. Someone also brought up the strategy the Vikings used to rebuild as ideal as well esp. since it mirrors the "long game" approach to rebuilding that ShanaLynch subscribe to.

If anyone would like to add those here, please feel free.

The 49ers situation is really unique. They gutted the roster to rebuild, then suddenly acquired who they think is their FQB. But instead of getting him on a rookie deal, he's being paid top dollar.

It really is unique. Like an expansion team you choose from a pool of players other teams don't care to lose and then wham, you find a FQB in year 2.

The good news is that after this $37M, the rest of his contract is very reasonable. But that's still much higher than MT's rookie contract which is $5.3M, $6.6M, $7.9M & $9.2.

Then again, we also have hoards more cap space than them too so they'll have to close the gap by using it on talented players.

They got a nice break with Mack becoming available because without him I bet they'd still be a 4 to 6 win team.

Personally I wish we had the balls to do that but hey we'll be getting a top 5 pick to try and close that gap. Long term with Jimmy I'd take that over Mitchell so I'm guessing we'll catch up to them.

Long term you'll take the older qb who has 2 signifficant injuries in about 10 starts? Homers gonna homer

Give me a break. There is nothing homerish about this

Yeah. Beginning of the season I heard plenty of Bears fans saying they'd rather have Jimmy. Things change contstantly and often on the NFL.

This is true

That's true NC just their usual posts. I think the Vikings will probably end up winning that division, I really think Mitch Trebisky has serious limitations as a quarterback so even if they go to the playoffs they may get one win and then they are out. I think the Vikings may still end up winning that division, I really think Mitch Trebisky has serious limitations as a quarterback so even if they go to the playoffs they make it one win and then they're out. His throws are so in accurate, his best attribute is running.

I felt the same way if we had Jimmy Garoppolo a much better qb with less weapons , we would get one win as a wildcard in the playoffs and then probably exit because of our defense.

I am biased, obviously, but I think we're comparing apples and oranges on this one.

Bears overhauled their offensive coaching staff, but they've been building their defense for Vic for a handful of years now.

On the other hand, we changed almost everything except the owner. Turned over the majority of the roster, new GM, new HC/staff, new training staff, and new defensive scheme.

I would love to be where the Bears are right now, but they had a lot less steep of a hill to climb from the bottom IMO.
Yeah, the Bears have been taking free agents like candy for a while. Robinson, Gabriel, Prince, their DT, Lynch, and more. The Niners are a lot more conservative free agency wise in general. I'm just glad last year we got Sherman

Once Jimmy Garoppolo comes back All will be a lot better. We would be seven and three just like them right now. (SD GB NYG ARIZ x2).

The good news is next year Jimmy will be playing with a good o line instead of patchwork and injuries. And a run game

Yeah, that was my original projection. 2nd place, 1 playoff win. After last night, I think they win the division but again, only 1 playoff win.

I hear you about JG...I had us originally at 7-9, maybe a borderline playoff team but had we got it, maybe one win too...just too many holes.

Very true but we all have to remember even though we have holes just like every other team, Jimmy can mask a lot of them.

Look at the OL last year they were what 26th and magically they were pretty much a top 10 line with the same exact players. His quick release is so beneficial to the line.
Look at the defense. Jimmy takes us on long drives and the defense is rested and we score therefore the defensive ranking was also top 10 when it shouldn't have been.

Aaron Rodgers Does the same thing for Green Bay's defense and o line. A lot of these great pressure defenses are negated because of the quick release.

Nothing wrong with being biased in a 9er forum!

Yeah, 6 of their 13 key starters are from 2017 & 2018. The other half came from 2015 & 2016.

In contrast, 15/20 of our defensive 'starters' are from 2017 & 2018.

I think you nailed my underline concern here.

I think ShanaLynch were banking too much on Garoppolo masking a conservative approach to rebuilding and hiding a dearth of talent on both offense and defense WHILE trying to learn a new system by playing through it.

I don't think that was fair.

Nagy did the opposite of that when he arrived...he saw he got a FQB and quickly surrounded him with as much talent as possible at the skill positions to take the pressure off a young QB learning a new offensive system.

Mack was just a major bonus to an already really good defense and they jumped on it with that same aggressive mindset.

I don't see Jimmy G. as the sure thing that some folks do. Before his injury, he had completed 59.6 % of his passes with 17 TDs and 8 Ints in 2018. Not exactly Pro Bowl type numbers. I think there are also questions about his durability based on his injury history with NE and SF in a relatively small number of games. He has a very fast release and a good arm, but is slow afoot. Let's see how things develop after his rehab .

I'd have to give the Bears the margin by quite a ways with their defense. Our defense is extremely suspect despite it's ranking, giving us a decent offense and special teams while the Bears appear to have all 3 phases set pretty well with youth and veterans.
I'm usually a rose colored glasses homer but until our defense proves that they can stop somebody besides the Raiders when it counts, then I don't think one pass rusher would solve the lack of discipline in the coverages and the fall off of Witherspoon, Colbert and Foster (even Jimmy G and oft-injured Goodwin to a degree). Next year could prove that last years play was the aberration and not a sophomore slump this year. I thought players usually improved the 2nd year in the same scheme?
Defensively our injured starters weren't playing much better than the 3rd stringers, while "experts* " are constantly questioning defensive schemes and positions players are asked to play. (*commentators and film junkies)
Besides Staley, McClinchey, Buckner, Warner, Kittle and Breida, most of our talent have been FA's, so I don't have a lot of confidence going into the draft
Admittedly I don't watch the Bears, (hated them since the Ditka days) but judging by roster "names" and current record they are pulling ahead in my (probably wrong) opinion.
I'm interested why most see us on even footing? This was supposed to be the easy part of the schedule and they seem to be floundering with the same repetitive mistakes and no signs that it's being rectified. Although the backups seem to be tackling better that our starters were.

If you're a minority, then I'm right there with you.

Good points. We added Mckinnon and Pettis., Bears added Robinson,Miller, Burton, Cohen, and Gabriel to go along with Jordan Howard
