I think ShanaLynch were banking too much on Garoppolo masking a conservative approach to rebuilding and hiding a dearth of talent on both offense and defense WHILE trying to learn a new system by playing through it.

I don't think that was fair.

Nagy did the opposite of that when he arrived...he saw he got a FQB and quickly surrounded him with as much talent as possible at the skill positions to take the pressure off a young QB learning a new offensive system.

Mack was just a major bonus to an already really good defense and they jumped on it with that same aggressive mindset.

I agree. Hopefully this year shows how badly we needed talent surrounding Jimmy Garoppolo, especially the defense. He makes everyone better, a true sign of a franchise quarterback because there are plenty of other "franchise quarterback's" that don't make everyone better around them.

If we don't go all in on a free agent pass rusher or Sam Backer, hopefully a corner or safety, Then I don't know what else the front office is doing. After two years of losing their jobs must be feeling a little less secure so I think this is the year they have to go all in

Good points. We added Mckinnon and Pettis, Bears added Robinson, Miller, Burton, Cohen, and Gabriel to go along with Jordan Howard

Agreed...my hope, like yours, is that ShanaLynch do learn that they need to do a better job of surrounding Garoppolo (so he doesn't have to press as much) with real, proven talent and alter their long-game plan a bit now that they DO have a FQB who can make those around him better (and not count on that).

Defense...that's a tougher one. I'd even throw in ST for review as well.

Thoughts?

Given that the Bears started rebuilding the same time we did (2017), I thought this would be a fun topic to track over the years. ShanaLynch seem poised to "build their way out of this through the draft." I'm much more partial to the Bears plan (balance of draft + younger free agents) per my annual off season plans (for us).

Chicago Bears:

So on offense, they drafted 10 players and added 6 free agents. On defense, they drafted 9 and added 5 free agents.

16 'starters' were added on offense and defense in 2017 & 2018.

Their average age 25.6 puts them as one of the 10th youngest teams currently. They only have two players making over $9.6M (Robinson & Mack). They currently have $19.3M in cap space before the expected $10M+ increase.

Currently, their collective defense, at a 77.5 average PFF grade, is outstanding (Fangio + Donatell). Their offense, is naturally, behind them but rising each week (Nagy).

Year 2 of the rebuild:
Current record: 7-3 / 1st Place
Projected record: 10-6 / Playoffs / 1st Place Division
Playoff prediction: 1 playoff win

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It's hard to compare strategies given our perpetual injuries (had to add more 'starters') esp. with the loss of Jimmy Garoppolo but here is your snapshot in time:

San Francisco 49ers:

So on offense, they drafted 10 players and added 8 free agents. On defense, they drafted 9 and added 4 free agents.

33 'starters' were added on offense and defense in 2017 & 2018.

Their average age 25.9 puts them as one of the 10th youngest teams currently. They only have one player making over $10M (Staley). They currently have a projected carryover cap total of $65,419,090 for 2019.

Currently, the collective defense, at a 58.2 average PFF grade, is very poor. Their offense at 71.1 is above average.

Year 2 of the rebuild:
Current record: 2-8 / Last Place
Projected record: 3-13 / #1 Draft Pick / Last Place Division
Playoff prediction: None

I thought Kendrick Bourne, Nick Mullens, and Elijah Lee were UDFA ?? what rounds drafted in ??
Niners will win a super bowl before the Bears

They acquired both of them. We did not.

I bet our records are reversed if we had acquired them instead (well the Bears are still probably better than 2-8 since Trubisky likely doesn't get hurt).

Oh well.

Add to that and they have their starting FQB

Very true but we all have to remember even though we have holes just like every other team, Jimmy can mask a lot of them.

Look at the OL last year they were what 26th and magically they were pretty much a top 10 line with the same exact players. His quick release is so beneficial to the line.
Look at the defense. Jimmy takes us on long drives and the defense is rested and we score therefore the defensive ranking was also top 10 when it shouldn't have been.

Aaron Rodgers Does the same thing for Green Bay's defense and o line. A lot of these great pressure defenses are negated because of the quick release.

Very good call in bold.

I hope JL/KS learned from that.

In `19 we have a draft and potential FA and trades to aggressively go after.

Not sure who they are at this point but there is always someone.

Correct. I only categorized: Draft, Trade or Free Agency.

So if there was an UDFA, he's just counted as part of that Draft class.

For sure...ShanaLynch have to look in the mirror and be honest with themselves. It's part of the growing process. I have faith in them as a unit still BUT they had to prove it this off season and build out a new plan.

The Bears look like the peak Harbaugh 49ers with Kap
This is starting to make it a tad more even. Ha.

I agree, they have been asked so many questions this year. Not like that sways their actions however I think it will because they've been hammered by lacking pass rush and surrounding Garoppolo with weapons that I think we make a change defensively, hopefully coaching.

Missed on mack and josh Gordon so I think this is the year we make a splash. They cannot afford another sub 500 season in my opinion so they have to go all and none of this we tried or we remained aggressively prudence. Time for her actions. They could upgrade the punter you are right about special teams

Outside of Mostert and Gould, ST hasn't made a play in years (fakes). Pussies.

Lynch...enough lip service. The team you "fleeced" is 8-3 and you effing suck with a clean slate.

Get your s**t together, get some effing balls, and DO SOMETHING...ADD TALENT. That's literally, your only job.

Why do people assume we "missed" on Mack? You can't strike a deal with someone who isn't interested in dealing with you. It makes more sense that the Raiders refused to deal with the 49ers than that Lynch was cheap in our offer to them. Also, Gordon is a major risk, not in ability, but in his off-field issues. Short term with an organization with a strong and established culture Gordon can be great. Short or long term with an organization trying to establish such a culture (and had just lost their FQB for the season) would not work well. Paying Ward and Armstead was majorly risky (perhaps stupid, even), but the high cost is short term and they'll be gone soon enough, or brought back at reduced cost. There were so many holes on this roster that we were never going to fix all of them in two off-seasons. This regime has not been perfect, but they have done well in finding some cornerstone pieces. This next draft is crucial for them to find more cornerstones for the roster. I will continue to give Lynch and company the benefit of the doubt. It will be all the sweeter when they do put everything together and win our sixth Lombardi trophy.
