The question is..why HASN'T Kyle fired him already.

No clue, but my guess is that Kyle doesn't pay too much attention to special teams. The guess is likely wrong because as I've stated earlier, they have provided Hightower with players. People may not like drafting a punter in the 4th, but Wish clearly has some ability beyond the standard punter. Hightower doesn't even attempt to use him. Before Mostert broke out as our top back, he was a really good gunner on special teams. By contrast, I think Jim Harbaugh really prioritized special teams. If there is one thing he is better than Kyle at, that's it.

Whats Seely up to these days? Those special teams were elite! (Except Kyle Williams )

Or pluck some consistently good special teams coach from a college program. Looking his Hightower's bio, he's not going anywhere. I was aware of the low punt return average, but I always looked at that as more of a function of Wish's punts. So the question is, is our return game below average thanks to the returners or are they coached to call fair catches the way they do.

Given all of them including River Cracraft fair catches with nobody within 30 yards of him, my guess is they are coached this like a prevent defense.

I'd agree.
We don't appreciate how good the 2011 49ers' special teams unit was.

SF added 66 expected points that season (#1) — a 🤯 boost. For comparison, the 2020 49ers lost 52.3 expected points on ST (#30).
That's a 118-point difference over the whole season, or over a TD per game!

First words in this thread still ring true.
I keep coming back to the 49ers finding a return man this offseason. Their average starting field position under Shanahan/Lynch:

'17: 23rd
'18: 32nd
'19: 2nd
'20: 23rd
One of these is unlike the other. It's been what, a decade (Ginn) since the Niners had a reliable return man?
