I've said it many times... Reed is our best KR.

Deebo has a chance to be better though we haven't seen it yet.

I wholeheartedly agree. When Pettis said Taylor was the best returner last year, that felt more safe. Reed, Pettis and Deebo might have pretty dynamic ability and far better upside (nothing against Taylor though).

We moved up to take him and one of the reasons given was his his PR capability. Once he got here, that kinda went away. Only thing i can think of was that kyle didn't want him injured returning punts. Yet that WAS a reason given for jumping up to get him. Turns out he is just a WR, Period.

I was very disappointed in not seeing him light up the games with some spectacular PR. Was this the ST coach or HC? Whatever, if he wasn't planned to return punts, then it would follow, maybe we should have taken someone else. Maybe he was injured when he arrived? IDK. Whatever, he has been a disappointment to date. If he was drafted for returning punts also, then he should be doing just that.

It isn't that we don't have a bunch of WRs .....we have some we won't be able to keep. Being a PR would /should be an important part of WRs job, particularly if that was one of the reasons he was drafted. No idea what his injury is/was, but i am looking forward to Pettis showing off his PR skills this yr...unless he remains injured. If that is the case, then let's find someone else who CAN return punts and move on from Pettis. His films of PR on Utube were spectacular. What happened?

Exactly. Kyle himself justified the move up referencing his NCAA TD record as a returner. He and Reed were #1 and #2 in the nation and are on your roster so to not develop and use them is flat out stupid. Hightower is just way too conservative IMHO.

And the actual false narrative spit out in here (you know who you are) that Kyle doesn't want his premier skill positions returning punts for fear of injury was just debunked by Pettis himself.

Kyle wants a weapon back there (just like his punter).

Wow, now THAT"S what i want. Aside from Gould, ST was invisible last yr. And PR was just not anything kyle had time for. Well, here is a guy who should be back there. Last two yrs kyle was up to his armpits in alligators and sure, ST got short shrift, as it well should. Now tho, we got talent, not at every slot but at most. Missing OG and DB starters, and on OG, proven backups. DBs, with Joe Woods , who knows,? Maybe we had talent back here all the time and the DB mission of trailing WRs was laughable. So Woods is going to get us a professional back there and coaching these guys like they should have been coached, two yrs running.

Except for OGs, we got talent across the O. Now kyle DOES have time for STs, and if the current asst coach who heads up STs is kept on then kyle needs to hand manage STs also....yeah, that IS ridiculous. Get us a ST coach and the best around...and then use STs as a weapon, not a part of the team that is a bullseye for the opponent. Seasoned professionals say STs are 1/3 of the team. Fine. Point is it is way past time for kyle to lean on STs and get them on board. Because last two yrs, except for Gould, they weren't '. IF they contributed 10%, not 33% , but just a measly 10%, that wins us a couple more games last yr, maybe more. So time has come...JL and KS...get the ST in gear and up to par where they should be as of preseason yr 3.

No more excuses. Just get 'Er done. And if that means a new ST coach, so be it. But do it now. We will need that other 10%...or 33% , whatever it really is. Just putting ST aside wont' pass muster in yr 3.

What about that KR Rick James "b**ch" housed vs Seacawks last year. That was some pretty elite football speed and elusiveness.

Definitely. Pettis, Reed, James, Taylor and Deebo should all be genuinely competing now on equal ground. May the 1-2 best win and help us get a W here and there.
You know you guys are bored when we have a Special Teams coach thread lol
^^^True, X, but in this case, we got a ST coach who is in need of some good ST play. And to date, aside from Gould who is not here, our ST has been miserable. Way beyond miserable. He has to either make the STs look good or he is going to be elsewhere next yr at this time. WISH will definitely help some, But on punt coverage, KO coverage, he has to do better. We just got rid of two asst coaches who weren't doing their jobs, DL and DB coaches. Hightower has to be very aware of that. I hope he gets it together. And kyle and JL now have more time to focus on asst coaches. I hope this motivates Hightower to do greater things.

We need ST to become a weapon... if that puts one of our WRs at risk, well, so be it. Simple things like not knowing when to field a punt or when to let it go....those are things every PR should know. Plus we need to dedicate certain guys to the job, so there are no muffs, no screwups. That is all part and parcel of being ST coach. STs are supposed to be 1/3 of the game. Last yr it was all Gould. This yr we need good participation by PRs. We know that WISH will greatly help STs on punts. But our ST coach better have his guys ready for it.
