I'm not sure how you prepare for a fake punt that early in a game when you have the team backed up inside their own 30. Who does that? Be honest and admit you were caught by surprise. I actually missed it live because I was getting something in the kitchen assuming it would just be a routine punt.
Pete would have looked like a total idiot if that hadn't worked. They could have gone down a TD really early. It shows how desperate they were. They needed something to fire up the team and the crowd after losing 3 straight and 4 of 5 home games this years.
How do you prepare? Please. You become a professional coach. This dud is no more than a cheer leader. 4 years and nothing is better,
OK so how would a professional coach have been better prepared and or saw that fake coming that early in the game?
Does every team who gets beat with a fake punt play in a game have an unprofessional STs coach or does that only apply to ours?
Your reasoning would stack up if this was a one off situation. He admitted he stuffed up on 3 games this season. This is a brutal game where getting 3 chances is rare. There are players making muffs, fumbles, penalties, missed tackles, missed goals and ped suspensions on Special Teams. There is no discipline. There is no accountability because they all still have a job on this team.
So, to answer your question- how does a pro coach prepare?
1. Recognize that 16 years as a coach (not counting the "other years"
) could be counted as 1 year 16 times over if you don't learn/do anything new.
2. Practice everything other teams can do over and over again.
3. Know your players extremely well but don't be their buddy. Grow leaders not followers.
4. To know and not to do is not to know. (try something for once in your career).
5. Work harder, especially when you first stuff up.
6. Have the courage to let your HC know that the work you have done justifies doing something other than fair catch etc.
7. Get out if you are in over your head.
To answer your second question - Are other coaches unprofessional if they miss a fake?
Yes if it is a pattern or part of a larger failure. Yes to a degree if they were napping on another teams ability to fake. No if their players are trash and they tried to beat it.
My question to you is if this happened in the SB would it be acceptably for him to say "that play was on me. We've got to do better. Totally my fault."
