Its not like they ran it back with the exact same talent as last year though. Do you feel its a coincidence that the defense got better with the additions of Bosa, Ford, Kwon and several of these younger dudes having another year under their belts? I have no doubt that Woods and Kocurek helped quite a bit but there are likely numerous factors that came into play and you can't really underrate the role that the significant bump in talent played.

Hey Joe Woods, the grass isn't always greener.

The grass is browner

Woods is a big loss, but I'm glad we didn't lose Kocurek. It will be real interesting who we get as DB coach. Given our dominant DLine, I'd go with a coach that does more man to man vs zone defense.

The personnel is built for a zone defense.

It does, I'd look to bring in Richards but I'm happier no one grabbed our offensive guys. McDaniels & LaFleur are studs.

Yeah I hope there is a plan to bring in Richard or someone like Steve Wilks who would bring a tremendous amount of experience to the staff and is a guy that has been quite well liked by his players at his various stops.
"I feel like I've been around the league long enough and I felt my reputation was good enough that if I signed a one-year deal and it didn't work out, I'd be able to find employment," Woods said. "But I was basically betting on myself." -Woods

Well...if he likes one year deals, he's gonna love Cleveland!
(Maybe he'll be back in 2021)

Yeah. Although the big one for me was the amount of interchangeable S's run, C2 & C4 added far more and the most important, was communication in coverage. Far far far less blown coverages with essentially the same unit. Hopefully Saleh can pick those elements and system up and keep it going moving forward.

If Woods does leave, possible replacement Marquand Manuel just agreed to be the Eagles secondary coach. Richards, Walker and maybe Steve Wilks available thought. So not the end of the world.

Sounds like Richards might be the move

"Joe Woods, the secondary coach, he's done a fantastic job," Rapoport said on-air. "He's expected to become the Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator. From what I understand, among the candidates being considered to replace Woods are former Cowboys passing-game coordinator for defense, Kris Richard.

Yes! Was really wanting this guy a couple years ago when the Cowboys got him. Great secondary coach and knows this scheme inside and out.
Richard would be turning a frown upside down. Reportedly has a good relationship with Sherman, knows Saleh and could teach the DBs the dark art of Grab-Fu.

I wouldn't mind Richard at all.
Somehow the 49ers may actually upgrade their coaching staff.
