Should this hire fortify the scheme or execution of the scheme?

As long as our DBs sometimes stop trailing, not looking back for the ball, and constantly committing PI penalties it will be an improvement.

He's the DB coach, guys.
The #49ers have hired Joe Woods to be the team's defensive backs coach/passing game coordinator.

Here's what Shanahan had to say on the addition of Woods... pic.twitter.com/RGdYz8Orka

Interesting perceptive
Big shoes to fill for Woods, replacing the highly regarded Jeff Hafley in that role. https://t.co/z8Ig2Zj96V

Haffely wasn't the problem, Saleh is the problem.

They both were the problem. Saleh was getting better though, and I'm giving him another year before I call for his job.

Could we take this as a sign Kyle wants to expand the types of coverages in the back end?

"Anybody who is familiar with Joe as a coach knows that he is passionate about the fundamentals of the game and we look forward to seeing the impact he has on our team."
Fundamentals were specifically mentioned. Indictment on Hafley?

No idea, but it's possible. It's one thing to call different coverages but there are nuances to each type of coverage that perhaps Saleh simply doesn't have experience with to oversee the implementation of. Just as an example, Saleh is well versed with Cover3 and Cover1 since that's what they played a lot of in SEA/JAC. What's his experience teaching Quarters or Cover 6, or other two deep safety coverages? Does he know enough to point out the finer details of what's being done incorrectly, or how it can be done better?
From 2007 to 2013, Woods was coaching under Leslie Frazier in MIN (Frazier was either DC or HC). Frazier is a disciple of Monte Kiffen (and Lovie Smith) who is all about that Cover 2. We'll have to wait and see is all that means anything.

Breer is connected, but he's also an OSU alum.

Kyle's statement about Woods's emphasis on "fundamentals" suggests to me that he is going to be up in the faces of the DB's to execute, execute, execute--including improving takeaways. It appears that this is also the emphasis in the hiring of the DL coach. If this is true, the defense would be substantially better, even apart from the anticipated addition of key players.

I believe so with this! Sounds like Saleh is still the play caller but we might have our Ken Norton Jr. for the back end of the defense. Interesting.
The 49ers now have two "coordinators" on defense with the hiring of DBs coach/passing game coordinator Joe Woods. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh remains as the play caller.https://t.co/25sKEse9ot

Hopefully, the presence of Woods will because Saleh to up his game.
