Yes, but done without embarrassing Saleh nor casting aspersions on Saleh, at the same time, getting us a co-DC who is an expert in the DB defense game. And if things don't work out still, then there is always the Co- DC there who could move into the DC job.. This was well done...but i sure hope Woods is as good as his past hx has proven.
can someone post what this guy will do?

Shanahan and Lynch seem to want to have collaborative relationships whenever possible. That kind of environment can work well - if you have the right combination of people. This "co-coordinators" could work out well in that the team could benefit from the inputs from two coordinator-quality coaches or it could turn into a power struggle where collaboration is nowhere in sight.

Take over salehs job in the middle of the 2019 season.

They might as well get it over with. Just name Woods the DC and move Saleh to LBs.
If not, then make sure to ask Woods, not Saleh, for draft input. IMO if FO drafts an LB or DB first, they'd be drafting based on their blueprint needs, which might mean that Saleh still has a few lives left as DC.

If they still draft CBs that are 6'2" with long arms and big DL that can stop the run, then we will know who is still in charge

Well, what the F,O has done is at least put us in the position to do exactly that. Actually, altho i wanted a Bowles type guy, i kinda like the idea of having a LB coach, currently our DC, AND a DB coach, share responsibility for the D. Got an excellent position coach at both DB and LB. Right now we need a studly DL coach, and we could very well end up with the best of all 2 ...or 3...worlds.

At the very least this was an excellent improvement in D backfield coaching and assuming the two guys can co-exist, this could work out better than we had hoped. Not exactly sure about the DL coach situation, but i am beginnning to appreciate the Joe W hire. Our fall back position is that , sure , at mid season, if things aren't going well we have a capable guy who could step in and be the man ...DC. Right now i like the way kyle and john did this.

I suspect, like the rest of us, they are anxious to see how this works out. Putting Joe in charge of passing D calls (assuming i know exactly what that means), seems like an answer to what really screwed us over last yr...a D backfield that was virtually crappy at best. And, with Joe, i don't expect to see our DBs always trailing and NEVER looking back. Good riddance to that archaic , worthless, method of coverage. It may have worked poorly but it looked even worse. Welcome, Joe W.

The real problem, however, was horrible lack of talent on D. For the above to work, we better draft the best ER , buy another in FA, and with luck, grab a 3rd ER in later rounds or UDFA. Also necessary is either drafting a starting LB or preferably, FAing one. Then, we still need another. Lastly, we need starting CBs and Ss, at least one of each , hopefully in FA and whatever we don't get there, in draft. FAing a CB and S seems like almost a slam dunk necessity.

This would be a bad time for Paraag to draw the purse strings tight. If we don't spend a lot of money on great D talent in FA this yr, then shame on us....and show paraag the door.

Will undo Hafley's mess, hold Saleh's hand and make him look competent as far as secondary goes...

A banana split for Saleh

Hopefully he'll be an effective coach in the secondary. I think that's his forte. Technique and specific coverages may be where his expertise lies.

He wasn't very good in Denver, so there's no reason to believe he's being groomed as a DC or going to provide some incredible insight to Saleh. He's a secondary coach.

I feel this is only a problem if you have multiple people trying to be THE GUY on game day. In other words, input and feedback is fine, but Saleh making the final call in the moment needs to be respected. If it's not, or if multiple coaches are leading in-game with the play calls based on game variables, then that's when you get problems.

I hope he can make a huge difference (coaching wise) to get everyone prepared. Aside from Shermy and K'waun, we suck at DB.

I agree. George seifert was the DB coach before becoming Walsh's DC. This adds pressure to Saleh to perform. I wouldn't mind him taking over if Saleh's defense isn't up to snuff. This guy has 20+ years of experience coaching secondaries. I think Saleh's comments last year about not valuing sacks put ShanaLynch on notice to upgrade the DC position with a guy who knows how to defend the pass. I like the hire and his potential to replace Saleh.

This is a good thing because becoming more diverse back there and communication was a total flop.

Agree, and I think the defensive scheme is going to be more man to man defense and probably less zone. I think this going to be a good scheme with the kind of pass rushers we now have.
